Iraqi cop hurt in Kirkuk rocket attack

KIRKUK, January 06 (Online): An Iraqi policeman was injured on Monday in a dawn rocket attack on a police post in Kirkuk, police said.
"A police post in the Uruba district was hit by a Katyusha rocket this morning at 6:00 am, which wounded a police officer," said Shirko Shaker Hakim, police director in Kirkuk. The incident followed an attack late Sunday in which the offices of prominent political group the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) were attacked, injuring a guard.

According to Hakim, two launchers capable of firing Russian-made Katyusha rockets were found by police, close to the city’s airport - now a US military base.

The launchers were directed at the base, indicating they were intended to be used in an attack on the facility, he said, adding that US troops had recovered the weapons after being alerted by his men.
