Giuliani: Clinton smeared Petraeus

By SHANNON McCAFFREY, Associated Press Writer 31 minutes ago

ATLANTA - Republican presidential contender Rudy Giuliani on Thursday accused Democratic rival Hillary Rodham Clinton of participating in "character assassination" for questioning Gen. David Petraeus about his assessment of progress in Iraq.
...............

Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker told Congress Iraq remains largely dysfunctional but said violence in recent months had decreased since the influx of 30,000 additional troops earlier this year.

"The reports that you provide to us really require the willing suspension of disbelief," Clinton said Tuesday.

Campaigning in Georgia, Giuliani assailed Clinton for the second straight day and tried to link her to a newspaper ad from the liberal anti-war group MoveOn critical of Petraeus. The ad accused Petraeus of "cooking the books" for the White House. "General Petraeus or General Betray Us?" it asked, playing off his name.

He should not be so quick to attack others, seeing that he has many serious misdoings in his life.

4. Poor oversensitive Republicans
I guess we have got to be more in tune with their feelings. Clinton's questioning was character assassination? Remember poor Alito's wife breaking down because Ted Kennedy wasn't kind to her husband?

17. That's all they have to run on.
They certainly can't run on their record. All they can do is attack and smear the Democratic candidates, it's all they've got.

"I'm a bigger patriot than YOU are"! :eyes:

5. Patraeus' boss, Admiral Falon "smeared" Patraeus more!
CentCom Chief Fallon: Petraeus Is ‘An Ass-Kissing, Little Chickenshit,’ ‘I Hate People Like That’

During the Iraq war, the Central Command (CENTCOM) head — who leads U.S. operations in the entire Middle East region — and the Multinational Force Commander (MNF) have regularly testified together about the course of the war in Iraq.

Former-MNF Commander Gen. George Casey and his CENTCOM Commander Gen. John Abizaid constantly briefed Congress about the situation in Iraq and its regional effects. In at least four public hearings after Casey took office in 2004, the pair testified together:

<snip>

In January, President Bush replaced Abizaid and Casey, who were “surge” skeptics, with Adm. William Fallon and Gen. David Petraeus. This week, Petraeus — in the first public hearings since taking on his new role — delivered his Iraq assessment to great media fanfare. But where was his boss, Admiral Fallon? Inter-Press Service suggests animosity between the two might be one reason for Fallon’s absence:

Fallon told Petraeus {in March} that he considered him to be “an ass-kissing little chickenshit” and added, “I hate people like that”, the sources say. That remark reportedly came after Petraeus began the meeting by making remarks that Fallon interpreted as trying to ingratiate himself with a superior.

7. Trying to assassinate Petraeus' character is like shooting bullets at nothing
What character? It was a foregone conclusion that no one's opinion was going to be changes, so there were two goals--don't give Democrats any quotes to jump on and keep the 66% of Republicans who think there's a coherent Iraq strategy together. (Good to keep them together. Makes them easier to watch.)

On the other hand, there's a small possibility that Petraeus actually believes what he's saying, in which case his judgment should be assassinated.

I don't believe a word the man said about Iraq, General or not. We all have the right to question anyone who we fear is lying to us, or pumping up the President's rheoteric.

23. I think Rudy's attack will help Hillary
Hillary's reputation for toughness is so strong that whether she replies to Rudy or not, she won't be hurt.

I don't know who I will vote for in the primary. I like Obama and Edwards a lot. But I think that the voters are hungry for someone tough enough to stand up to the Republican bullies, and I think Hillary is seen as the toughest of the Democrats.

24. Oh, the GOP has had the same talking points all week.
Did anyone else get a load of Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), the ranking member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, practically demanding an oath of allegiance from the Democrats after MoveOn.org ran their newspaper ads? Apparently all Democrats are instantly connected with MoveOn.org unless they prove otherwise. :eyes:

And then McCain started flinging around the term McCarthyism -- and he wasn't referring to Ros-Lehtinen's approach, either. Ya got the wrong end of the stick there, McCain.

all she did was rattle off a list of statistics that proved everything he said was a lie. She did this in less than 10 minutes. For anyone who wasn't watching the hearing, she was very good.

37. "We believe unlike Hillary Clinton that General Petraeus is telling the truth," Giuliani said.
"We believe unlike Hillary Clinton that General Petraeus is telling the truth," Giuliani said.

Calling the ad abominable, Giuliani said Clinton's comments followed up on it "in a very, very coincidental way."

He added, "What I don't think should happen in political discourse is the kind of character assassination that MoveOn.org participated in in calling him General Betray Us, that The New York Times gave them a discount to do and that Hillary Clinton followed up on with an attack on his integrity."

He also said, "It is time for Americans to really insist that American politicians move beyond character assassination and this is exactly what they attempted to do with General Petraeus."

"Maybe you can disagree with his tactics," Giuliani said of Petraeus. "I agree with them, but you have no right to disagree with his integrity."
