Manhunt on after 4 Miami-area police officers shot, one fatally
Source: Associated Press

<snip>

"A man shot and injured four police officers during a traffic stop today, killing one and triggering a manhunt in a suburban Miami neighborhood, officials said.

The other Miami-Dade County officers were being treated at hospitals, but authorities refused to release information on their conditions because they were trying to notify their families.

Investigators were looking for 30-year-old Kevin Wehner, last seen driving a white Honda Accord, said Linda O'Brien, a police spokeswoman. There was a chance another man also was involved.

The officers originally were conducting burglary surveillance when they stopped the man because he was driving a car erratically, O'Brien said. The man opened fire with a high-powered weapon and fled. It was not immediately clear if the officers returned fire."

1 officer shot dead, 3 wounded in SW Dade

<snip>

"One Miami-Dade police officer was shot dead and three others wounded late Thursday morning after they stopped a man driving erratically through a Southwest Miami-Dade County neighborhood.

The man opened fire on the officers with a high-powered weapon before fleeing, police said. Law enforcement officers from across South Florida swarmed to the scene to assist in the search for the suspect, identified as Kevin Wehner, 30. Streets and local highway exits were closed to seal off escate routes. Police warned Wehner may be armed."

<snip>

"The shooting happened a little after 11 a.m., when officers working on a burglary detail spotted the suspicious car in an apartment complex at Southwest 280th Street and 143rd Court, said Miami-Dade Police Cmdr. Linda O'Brien. The man inside stepped out of the car and opened fire on the officers with a high-powered firearm -- possibly an AK-47 -- striking four, then fled in the auto.

One of the wounded was a female officer whose leg was shattered by a bullet. She was undergoing surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital."

17. Concern for Lack of Information to Public
As a retired NY PD in Port St Lucie North of Miami 85 miles
the details of this shooting are sketchy at best but I am
concerned for the lack there of info to the Public, the
assailant was identified but more info should have been given
to the public, IE The spelling of his name indicated
possibility not 100% certainty that he was either creole or
Haitian this IS Important. The Public is the greatest asset in
a situation like this, Florida being a Peninsula's the route
of escape from the cutler bay area would be north or north
east to belle glade or the the west coast, specific picture id
and information should be across the internet and nightly
news. The Police Chiefs statement we are going to get this guy
seemed like the publics help was ignored or not to be
concerned with, many time(s) up here in Port St Lucie
criminals stop for gas or enter the turnpike from I-95, it a
natural location after driving 2.5 hours out of miami, the guy
could have well slipped under the radar by assistance in
another car certainly he be smart enough to operate a
automatic assault rifle he know best to dump the Honda and get
another car, all car jacking, or theft(s) all the way up the
coast should be consider a point of transition to escape why
aren't these issues be openly discussed with the public with a
statement? Case in point the fatal shooting in Pompano, You
mean to tell me NO ONE knows of that Lincoln(White) still un
found? even with 200K plus reward? The Issue where the Police
believe the public is of no use is usually the course of
action until there own efforts fail why so late in the
game?The issues should Be broad casted across Haitian french
written and spoken blog as well as radio and news, in in fact
he nationality warrants it, but once again we wait for the
Miami Police to decide when to ask for help.................??

2. The guy must've been really quick.
I wonder if any of those officers got off a shot.

The M-D cops should go train with NYPD Vice Squad.

Those dudes can hit you 50 times in three seconds.

What a tragic deal.

3. They had a triple police homicide in Odessa over the weekend.
The perp used the deadliest firearm avaiable- a shotgun.

http://www.mywesttexas.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=18807810&BRD=2288&PAG=461&dept_id=475626&rfi=6

ODESSA -- A whiskey-crazed west Odessan ran to his backyard upon seeing officers answer a 911 report that he was beating his wife before he shot three officers in a sequence that may have taken longer than the few seconds originally thought, a state investigator said Tuesday.
Currently facing two capital murder charges, Larry Neil White hid behind his backyard barbecue pit and shot Cps. Abel Marquez and Arlie Jones in the head with a 12 gauge shotgun, said Texas Ranger Capt. Barry Caver.

A third officer survived for a while until he was removed from life support.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. -- Police are now searching for a man named Shawn Sherwin Labeet after being "misled to believe" their suspect was another man in the shooting of four Miami-Dade police officers, according to investigators.

Police said Labeet is 25 years old and may have been using the identity of a man named Kevin Wehner.

Meanwhile, a Publix supermarket warehouse in Deerfield Beach is surrounded and it may be connected to the massive manhunt under way for the person who shot four Miami-Dade police officers.

They've had streets in Southwest Dade shut down all morning searching for this guy...I guess now it's Broward's turn.

I hope they catch him soon.

20. He needs to either turn himself in or do himself.
No excuse for killing a police officer. He needs to be off the streets one way or another.

22. Cop-shooting suspect killed
<snip>

"The man suspected of killing one Miami-Dade cop and wounding three others in a shootout Thursday morning was cornered and shot dead in a Pembroke Pines condo complex sometime before midnight, authorities said.

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez and Police Director Robert Parker, speaking at a news conference at about 12:30 a.m. today, told reporters police had shot Shawn Sherwin LaBeet at the Heron Pond Condos, 305 SW 85th Ave.

"He was armed with a loaded weapon and had additional ammunition,'' said Parker, who said LaBeet was wearing ``body armor."

"He had the mindset of surviving a confrontation with law enforcement officers," Parker added."
