Edwards Buys Ad to Rebut Bush on Iraq
By NEDRA PICKLER

WASHINGTON (AP) — In the clamor of Democrats assailing President Bush on Iraq, presidential candidate John Edwards has found a way to be heard after Bush addresses the nation Thursday night: He's buying time for a rebuttal. Edwards has bought two minutes of air time on MSNBC, scheduled to air after Bush's 15-minute televised speech from the White House at 9 p.m. EDT.

Bush is expected to announce plans to reduce the American troop presence in Iraq by up to 30,000 by next summer, but say that he will condition those and further cuts on continued progress.

"Unfortunately, the president is pressing on with the only strategy he's ever had — more time, more troops, and more war," Edwards says in the ad, according to excerpts provided by his campaign.

The ad was taped at Edwards' home in Chapel Hill, N.C., in the style of an Oval Office address, with him sitting at a desk and speaking straight to the camera, with American flag in the background.

10. Bush gets his ad time for free. All others have to pay.
Two minutes on MSNBC will be seen by, at best, ten percent of the same viewers.

But let's be realistic here. At this late stage of this ongoing crime, are there really any people left who can be swayed one way or the other?

This latest episode in the tired "bush show" is just window dressing to allow the media to make up scenarios like, "bush address rallies support for his wildly successful surge! Next stop on the bush crusade is Iran! All hail our great leader!"

14. Edwards Fights
When Lincoln was looking around for another General to lead the Army of the Potomac after the disaster at Fredericksburg, all of his advisors told him Grant was a drunken fool who would ruin the war effort. Nobody liked Grant. Lincoln replied, however, "I like Grant. He fights."

Say what they will about Edwards--millionaire hypocrite, hedge-fund advisor, expensive haircuts, etc ...-- I remember him continuing into April and May to battle it out with Kerry in every state primary in 2004, even after Kerry had practically "clinched" the nomination and everybody else had dropped out of the race.

One of the strongest features of Edwards as a leader is his energy, his combativeness. He comes across kind of smooth and soft at times, but he fights.

Edwards buys TV time to rebut Bush
By Sam Youngman
September 13, 2007

Instead of waiting for an invitation, former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) purchased two minutes of airtime on MSNBC Thursday night to rebut President Bush’s nationally televised address to the nation to discuss the war in Iraq.

The Edwards campaign declined to disclose the cost of the buy, but it said that Edwards would “remind the American people that Congress can — and must — force an immediate withdrawal from Iraq.”

The taped ad will feature Edwards speaking to the camera, and his campaign says it is the first time a Democratic presidential candidate has taken to the airwaves to challenge Bush on the war. Sen. Jack Reed (R.I.) is scheduled to give the formal Democratic response.

The ad follows reams of press releases Edwards has inundated the media with in recent days, weeks and months as he seeks to distinguish his voice on Iraq from that of his Democratic presidential rivals, Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) and Barack Obama (Ill.).
