Mexican Trucks Can Start U.S. Deliveries Today
Source: KTAR

Mexican trucks are getting ready to roll across the border.

The first of up to 150 Mexican trucks is ready to deliver cargo throughout the United States today.

--
Teamsters spokeswoman Leslie Miller tells FM News/Talk 92.3 KTAR they'll continue to fight the program. "In our view, this program is against the law."

She believes the Bush administration has something to hide.

"The Bush administration has been very secretive about their plans to open the border," Miller said. "They know the American people don't want it."

2. The Mexican invasion and occupation of America is about to...........
'surge' ahead as American workers will be replaced by past, present and future occupiers. Where have I recently heard about a very similar situation? bushco, corporate america and wall street are about to give Americans one more good screwing to remember THEM by.

6. We've been "invaded" by Irish, Italians, Africans (involuntarily), Asians,
other Hispanics, and many others over the years.

We have somehow survived all of these "invasions" and become a stronger more diverse people as a result. Some may believe that we would be a better country without the Irish, Italian, African, Asian and Hispanic "invasions", but I do not. If Mexican truck drivers can weaken our country in ways that millions of immigrants and thousands of Canadian truck drivers (some of whom are from French speaking Quebec) have been unable to accomplish, then they are indeed a force to fear.

9. I don't know if you've been paying attention lately
But I don't see much evidence that we are becoming a "stronger more diverse people". Wages for men and women are DOWN. Poverty and joblessness are up.

How is importing millions upon millions of impoverished people to work at menial labor and breaking the back of the skilled trades making this country "stronger", hmmm?

12. Immigration certainly has made us a more diverse country.
Has it made us stronger? I think that it has, but I realize that is a subjective judgment. You could make the argument that we would be stronger if our nation was a homogeneous group, i.e. all WASP's, all Native Americans, all Hispanic, etc.

You seem to be linking the "importing (of) millions upon millions of impoverished people to work at menial labor" with the decline in wages and an increase in poverty and joblessness. My response would be that these problems are caused by the way we run our country and economy, not by poor Mexican immigrants or truck drivers. If our country was run the way it should be, my guess is that most progressives would be happy to share our prosperity with those less well off.

11. How much trucking traffic will NOW be outsourced to Mexican...........
trucking companies? One HELL of a lot! While you're at it, why don't YOU check the Mexican truck driver's pay stub; could YOU or an American truck driver live on that amount? LEGAL immigrants that came to this country are quite different than ILLEGAL ALIENS and Mexican foreign truck drivers taking loads and jobs away from American citizen truck drivers. This is one invasion that American workers will NOT survive if it is allowed to continue.

13. You state well the difficult decisions that have to be made.
Rightly, I think, you welcome legal immigrants to this country, while opposing illegal immigration.

I don't see how you can oppose "legal" Mexican truck drivers entering the country. If they were entering legally as immigrants you would welcome them, even though, I assume, they would take an American workers job shortly after entering. Why is a legal Mexican truck driver worse than a legal immigrant?

14. And vice versa. This is a reciprocal agreement.
American truckers can now drive in Mexico.

I don't have a problem with this.

This is a pilot program. I heard there were 84 trucks involved, although this article says maybe 150. I guess the American trucker is doomed--not.

There seems to be a lot of chauvinism and nativism lurking behind all the outrage.
