U.S. troops release detained Iranians
Source: Associated Press via Yahoo! News

BAGHDAD, Iraq - U.S. troops released seven Iranians early Wednesday, hours after detaining them at a central Baghdad hotel, an Iranian embassy official said.

The Iranian diplomat, who refused to give his name, told The Associated Press that one of those released contacted the embassy Wednesday morning to say that they have been handed over to Iraqi authorities.
...
"At 7 a.m. today, a member of the delegation called the embassy and said they are now at the prime minister's office," the diplomat said. "The Americans released them. They held them until seven this morning."

1. This is good news I guess
I could just see this escalating into something much bigger. I expect we'll see more of the shit in the coming weeks. Banging the war drums again. Will there ever be an end to this? I get so discouraged. I don't think this is the end of this story either.

3. Interesting coincidence
"The arrests followed a speech by US President George W Bush in which he criticised Iranian interference in Iraq."

This was the interesting speech in which the commander in chief of an invading army in a country where hundreds of thousands have died under occupation accused Iran of "murderous activities". The words "pot" and "kettle" are inescapable.

"The Iraqi government helped secure their release early on Wednesday, a spokesman for Prime Minister Nouri Maliki told the BBC."

I assume the arrests weren't cleared with the "democratically elected" government of this sovereign country.

US forces say free eight Iranians held in Iraq

(Updates with U.S. statement, background, context)

By Ross Colvin

BAGHDAD, Aug 29 (Reuters) - U.S. forces said on Wednesday
they had detained eight Iranians overnight and seized a
suitcase full of money from their central Baghdad hotel but
later freed them after consultations with the Iraqi government.

A media adviser to Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, Yasin
Majid, said the men had been members of an Iranian delegation
invited to Iraq by the Ministry of Electricity to discuss
construction of a new power plant.

"While there, Coalition Forces confiscated a laptop, cellphones
and a briefcase full of Iranian and U.S. money," the statement
said, adding that the men were then taken to a U.S. military
facility for questioning.

"The Iranian nationals had passports. It was later determined
that two of the Iranian individuals were carrying diplomatic
credentials. The Iranian nationals were released in consultation
with the government of Iraq," the statement said.

6. What we really need are some dead Polish prisoners in German (oops,
I mean Iranian) uniforms, so we can start World War II (oops, make that World War III).

7. US admits Iranian arrests mistake
The US military has admitted to what it called a "regrettable incident" after it arrested a group of eight Iranians in Baghdad.
The Iranians were held at a checkpoint and detained overnight. They were freed after the Iraqi government intervened.

Iran says the men were in the city at the invitation of Iraq's government, and that the US action was unjustified.

An aide to the top US commander in Iraq later said the US accepted that the Iranians were on official business.

8. "Shoot first, ask questions later." - The "new" fascist Junta MO.
"Torture first, ask questions later." probably is more accurate.

After all... herr bu$che's "Iraq/n" is the 51st state... no need to ask the "sovereign" elected government any "permission" at all BEFORE breaking their laws.

Purple fingers? Yeah... Right!

10. They've changed the lead paragraph???
BAGHDAD - A group of eight Iranians, including two diplomats, were released by U.S. forces Wednesday after being detained because unauthorized weapons were found in their cars, the U.S. military said. An adviser to the top U.S. general in Iraq called the situation "regrettable."

13. Change references is the new Yahoo's PROPAGANDA trick...
Edited on Wed Aug-29-07 09:23 AM by jordi_fanclub
Not Associated Press fault... only!

Until recently every Y! article had an article reference number embedded in the URL.
But, you know, some time ago they closed the boards and next they associate with M$.
Now with the last dirt trick they change the article text without change the article's link.

Ok, lesson learned... I will post an article pic next time I use a Y! source.
Guess that the new upgrade was the "graduation"... Yahoo! the MINISTER of PROPAGANDA!
