Drug Firms Gain Church Group's Aid
A Christian lobbying group fighting the proposed importation of low-cost prescription drugs has received behind-the-scenes help from the drug industry, the latest example of pharmaceutical companies trying to influence Congress clandestinely.

The Traditional Values Coalition, which bills itself as a Christian advocacy group representing 43,000 churches, has mailed to the districts of several conservative House Republicans this sharply disputed warning: Legislation to allow the importation of U.S.-made pharmaceuticals from Canada and Europe might make RU-486, called the "abortion pill," as easy to get as aspirin.

The Traditional Values Coalition (TVC) portrays its campaign as a moral fight for the "sanctity of life." Documents provided to The Washington Post, however, show that drug lobbyists played a key role in crafting its argument and in disseminating the information to lawmakers. Pharmaceutical companies oppose the legislation -- which would legalize the reimportation of U.S.-made prescription drugs that sell for less in Canada than in the United States -- not over abortion but because it would erode their profits.

1. Guess it's a "Traditional Value" to lie through your teeth...
RU-486 is not available at the drug store. You have to get it from your Doctor.

Now, if you get your aspirin fromn your Sawbones, this is a true statement, but then, it's always been true. Problem is, how many of us get our ASA only from our Doctors? I sure don't.

This past Sunday, Eli Lilly took out a full-page ad in the paper (I'll bet that was cheap, right? "Sorry, Evan, but you're getting only $300,000 this year. That expensive newspaper ad telling everyone to call you and tell you what we've told you already, y'know") Telling us that if this bill becomes law, we will be flooded from Canada (Blame Cananda!) and Mexico with cheap counterfit drugs. I don't know about Mexico, but i have read that drug stores in Canada get their stuff from Pfizer, Lilly et al. just like the drug stores down here. But they don'e pay anywhere near what we do.

Now, I would like the drug companies to tell me just what exactly keeps US pharmacies like Osco or CVS from selling me counterfits here? And don't ry to tell me it's because Murkan pharmacies are more "moral" than Canandien ones. Bullshit! They'tre run by Capitalists, just like Enron.

I wouldn't be surprised to find that Eli Lilly makes bogus stuff for the off-shore market themselves....
