Suicide bombers kill 20 in Iraq sect attack-police
14 Aug 2007 18:54:12 GMT

BAGHDAD, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Suicide bombers driving
fuel tankers killed 20 people and wounded 70 in what
appeared to be an attack on an ancient minority sect
in northern Iraq on Tuesday, police said.

Police said it appeared three bombers driving separate
tankers had attacked Yazidi sect members in different
neighbourhoods in Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of
Baghdad, detonating their vehicles in quick succession.

Yazidis are members of a pre-Islamic Kurdish sect and
live in northern Iraq and Syria.

1. the Yezidi's are often termed "Satan Worshippers"
Edited on Tue Aug-14-07 02:35 PM by Teaser
and interestingly, in a sense, they are.

They revere Melek Taus/Shaytan, who is more or less the chief angel created by God.
In conventional islamic theology, Satan/Shaytan was cast out of heaven for refusing to bow to God's new creation,
man.

However, in Yezidi belief, this was a test, and Shaytan's resistance to the order to bow was homage to God, who alone deserves worship.

Yezidi's revere Melek Taus nearly as much as God, and as he is "closer" to this world than their creator god, is effectively a god himself to the Yezidis.

Many muslims regard Yezidi's as a Christian might a Satanist and any accusations against them by islamic accusers should be viewed very skeptically. Conversely, attacks like this, against Yezidi's will be increasingly common as political islam becomes the dominant force in Iraq.
