Census Reports Non-Hispanic Whites Composed Less Than Half The Population In 303 Counties

(AP) Whites are now in the minority in nearly one in 10 U.S. counties.

And that increased diversity, fueled by immigration and higher birth rates among blacks and Hispanics, is straining race relations and sparking a backlash against immigrants in many communities.

"There's some culture shock," said Mark Mather of the Population Reference Bureau, a Washington-based research agency. "But I think there is a momentum building, and it is going to continue."

As of 2006, non-Hispanic whites made up less than half the population in 303 of the nation's 3,141 counties, according to figures the Census Bureau is releasing Thursday. Non-Hispanic whites were a minority in 262 counties in 2000, up from 183 in 1990.

It's using statistics to put across the message you want people to hear. Tell them they're the minority in 10% of the counties and they think they're being overrun. It's basically catering to the anti-immigration crowd.

3. Shocker! New Orleans has changed.

The biggest changes were in Orleans Parish, La., home to New Orleans. The share of non-Hispanic whites in Orleans Parish grew from 27 percent in 2005 to 34 percent in 2006, while the share of blacks dropped from about 68 percent to 59 percent.

I've heard and read this many many times. This seems to have been a really effective meme that got out there several years ago (probably prepping the battlezone for the alien hatefest). I have also heard it in the "Do you realize that WE are going to be in the minority by 2050????" or something like that.

I heard this on NPR this morning. I would assume that Fox and CNN will dutifully run it on the Emmanuel Goldstein update loop (meaning their regular programming).

14. It's also a fuzzy level of aggregation since counties have vastly different population counts.

L.A. county has more than 10 million residents, but many counties have less than 100,000. Some have fewer than 1000.

6. I think in Kern, Orange and San Diego counties in CA conservatives make up the majority.

It is a pleasant thing to go to Santa Barbara county and see some peace and anti war anti Bush stickers on cars. Here in Kern county there are mostly bush/cheney 04 stickers and yellow ribbons and SUV's with a line up of little white people on the back window signifying membership in the "more than the nuclear family" club. Also the ubiquitous "my kid was saint of the month at Freedom/Patriot Christian school" bumpber sticker along with a chrome fish swimming on buy.

The host read two headlines about illegal immigration, one about fining employers and one about a smaller amount of money being sent back to Mexico, and then topped those off with this story. The message was clearly, "The Mexicans are taking over!"

I'm sure they have a solid citizen tax base in the mile high city. In my town ( Cleveland ) the mayor is firing city workers who do not live in the city limits.
Not many big business or little business are located in the city limits either so the tax base keeps eroding and eroding.
