Energy Bill Adopted by House Requires Utilities to Use Renewable Power Sources
Source: New York Times

“It’s a big, big deal,” said Representative Edward J. Markey, Democrat of Massachusetts and a longtime member of the energy committee. “There has been no legislation like this for a generation.”
~snip~
But Americans will soon light their houses differently. The bill outlaws the sale of 100-watt incandescent light bulbs by 2012 and requires that all bulbs be 300 times more efficient than today’s ordinary bulbs by 2020.

The White House expressed its opposition to the Democratic energy bills, saying they did not meet their stated goals of reducing oil imports, strengthening national security, lowering energy prices and beginning to address global warming. The White House also said the tax bill unfairly singled out the oil industry.

This is an impressive bill that the House passed. Bush is threatening to veto. We need to override the veto.
This bill covers things like outlawing regular light bulbs so people must have enrgy efficient light bulbs. It is a great way to start getting the climate corrected on our planet.

I sometimes get very sad when I think of all the hurdles we have to overcome just to ensure that we can safely live on our own planet. And, it even saddens me more when I read things like this:

“This is really an exercise in sterile futility,” Mr. Barton said, referring to the president’s veto threat, “because this bill isn’t going anywhere.”

This bill is hitting Bush's desk by the end of the year.

I hope you will pressure your congress people and call the republicans listed in this article to tell them that the lives of our children is worth investing in energy efficiency.

Here is Representative Joe L. Barton's phone number:

3. 300 times more efficient? Congress must be off its rocker
I often hear that LEDs are 8-10 times more efficient than incandescent bulbs. I highly doubt that the amount of energy they consume can be cut by a factor of 30.
