Gonzales Submits Testimony Explanation, Leahy Says Not Good Enough
Source: TPM Muckraker

... that long awaited clarification from Alberto Gonzales about his testimony last week has arrived. And as you'd expect, it follows the same line that Gonzales and the administration have been touting, most recently in the letter yesterday from Michael McConnell.

. . .

Here's what Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) had to say after taking a gander:

“The Attorney General’s legalistic explanation of his misleading testimony under oath before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week is not what one should expect from the top law enforcement officer of the United States. It is time for full candor to enforce the law and promote justice, rather than word parsing.

“The Attorney General has until the end of this week to correct and supplement his testimony. I hope he will take that opportunity to clarify the many issues on which he appears not to have been forthcoming and to tell the Senate Judiciary Committee and the American people the whole truth.”

10. Just ignore Specter's artificial deadlines, okay?
That idiocy has nothing to do with the real deadline, that which is afforded to EVERY witness who is challenged on false and misleading testimony. It is standard policy.

2. so, what are you going to do about it. Everyone is so afraid to use the word LIE
They tip toe around so not to offend anyone. They don't even use the word perjury, but misled is OK

Does Congress understand that by not calling these people out, they are offended the people that elected them?

6. To try to avoid the endless gridlock that would occur if the congress
were allowed to behave like dickchin, there are certain protocols that have been enshrined in some customs and rules.
One of those is that you do not call anyone a liar. Their own necessary parsing regards a lie as misleading with a malicious purpose, while simple misleading is that the guy was trying to do the right thing, by his own lights.

To accuse anyone in the congress or the other two branches of lieing is to earn a possible censure or even removal from office. It's pretty serious shit, therefore the tappy toeing.

11. I agree completely.
I might well know my mother in law is a right wing bigot, slow and ponderous of thought and possessing zero philosophical generosity, but there is no way I would point this out. Most republicans won't get it if you treat with them in a sophisticated and genteel way and deny reality when you use verbal brass knucks.

It just doesn't pay.

be an impetus for him to actually start telling the truth...

Without it, why would he bother?
