Judge Nominee Runs Into Senate Trouble

Wednesday August 1, 2007 9:01 PM

WASHINGTON (AP) - Senate Democrats on Wednesday threatened to block Republicans from forcing a vote on a Mississippi judge in a new fight in the well-trod arena of judicial confirmations.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he would move to kill the Republicans' symbolic resolution calling for a vote of the full Senate on the appeals court nomination of Leslie Southwick of Mississippi.

The motion could come as early as Thursday. Democratic leaders wanted to wait to see if the nomination survived a Thursday session of the Senate Judiciary Committee, several officials said.

Republicans said any vote on Southwick's nomination, even a procedural one such as Reid's, would put senators on record on whether President Bush's nominees should receive up-or-down confirmation votes by the full Senate.

3. We should propose a trade
An up or down vote on this judge for an up or down vote on the Levin-Reed Iraq timetable bill.

5. I would propose a different trade
They get an up-or-down vote on this judge *after* B* re-nominates and Senate does an up-or-down vote on all the Clinton nominees that the Pukes never gave an up-or-down vote when they controlled the Senate. What goes around comes around.

4. Republicans
I bet they now want an up or down vote; hypocrits.

The Democrats better not give in to these jerks on this nomination after what the Republican obstructionist have done over the past 6 months. If they do, I have lost all respect for any of their whining, crying crap.

6. How about Up-Down on the Iraq war?
If the Dems go along with this, they are toast. Perhaps, we could label them milquetoast.

8. The Filibuster Party wants an 'Up or Down' Vote?
Don't they 'remember' that all 'controversial' matters 'require' 60 votes? - BTW, why haven't the Democratic senators et al been demanding the same 'up or down' vote on 'clean bills' on all their congressional priorities? This should be done over and over and over until the filibustering 'obstructionist' (another term the Democrats seen loathe to use) Republicans are exposed to the American public for exactly what they are. No need to reinvent the wheel on this one. I certainly hope they aren't hoping for the main$$$tream media to do anything but repeat Republican talking points, so they need to throw the Republican words back at them mercilessly and let them choke on 'em!
