Operation to rescue Koreans begins-Afghan official
Wed Aug 1, 2007 7:53AM EDT

KABUL, Aug 1 (Reuters) - An operation aimed at rescuing
the remaining 21 Korean hostages held by the Taliban began
on Wednesday in Afghanistan's Ghazni province, a provincial
official said, hours after the expiry of another Taliban
deadline.

"The operation has started," said Khowja Seddiqi, the district
chief of Ghazni's Qarabagh district, where the Taliban
kidnapped 23 Korean Christian volunteers nearly two weeks ago.

He did not give more details or say who was involved.

1. Do I have a poor understanding of the concept of operational security?
...or is it actually a GOOD idea to announce to the global media that you are starting a top secret hostage rescue operation? When they send out a press release first like this, it seems a bit more like PR for a product launch than a military operation.

2. Reuters: ADVISORY-Afghan rescue operation story withdrawn
ADVISORY-Afghan rescue operation story withdrawn
(Please be advised that the GHAZNI, Afghanistan, datelined story reporting that an operation to rescue 21 Korean hostages held by the Taliban had begun is wrong. The official cited in the story did not make the comment reported. There will be no substitute story.)

Probably is true, but it shouldn't have been broadcast to the hostage takers.
