Clark announces endorsement from Native American Times
"Proven to be a remarkable leader."
http://www.nativetimes.com/index.asp?action=displayarticle&article_id=3440
TULSA OK
Sam Lewin 12/30/2003
Citing his strong belief in tribes as sovereign governments and stellar military credentials, the Native American Times has endorsed General Wesley Clark in the Democratic Primary. The editorial will appear in the January 1, 2004 editions of the Native American Times, the Native American Times New Mexico edition and the website www.nativetimes.com. The Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona and North Dakota primaries will all be held on February 3, 2004. Those states have significant Native American populations who are traditionally registered as Democrats.

An editorial explaining the decision states that Clark has “…proven to be a remarkable leader. If words are a person’s bond, and actions are even more telling, then Clark is the clear choice from a Native and non-Native American perspective. If our country truly desires peace, it will need a proven peacemaker. Only Clark fits that role."

"Indian people share a common ground with Clark and his military service. Native Americans have volunteered for service, during peacetime and wartime, in greater numbers than any other racial group. Most of us know a Native friend or relative in the armed services right now. Clark appreciates the commitment Native Americans have displayed in defending their country and has expressed it on numerous occasions.More

3. That's fantastic
The tribes are a huge force in Oklahoma in particular. For all the abuse that's been heaped on them by our government over the centuries, they have been amazingly faithful to our armed forces, and they know a proven warrior (a term which means much more to them than fighting) when they see one. More proof that Wes is connecting with a broad base of people.

4. Terrific News
Native Americans have been screwed by the gov for forever.

I think Wes Clark would be honorable in making this group's needs part of his administration.

6. Excellent quote and excellent news!
I'm so proud of Clark for reaching out to so many
communities. He doesn't take anyone for granted, and
he shouldn't. No candidate should.

Excellent.

7. Clark Mentioned Returning Buffalo To The Great Plains
Honestly, couldn't you imagine the Plains being turned into Wind Farms and Buffalo Feeding Grounds again...

And perhaps the US could cede control over to some Tribes or allow them some monetary benefit.

This could start to make up for the huge amounts of money that the Tribes have coming.

9. I always think about that
I almost fell off my chair when he said that about the buffalo. One of those hit-myself-in-the-head moments.

11. what I saw here was a strong commitment to treaties, long overdue,
I guess Clark has spoken, elsewhere, of Buffalo on the plains, but the Native American endorsement is about Clark's support of international treaties and the Indian Nations' call for the US to recognize those commitments.

Thanks, pinto

12. the buffalo commons is happening by default
since the drought, the number of cattle ranchers who have turned back to bison has been quite remarkable. Now with mad cow, this trend will probably accelerate. The market still doesn't respond well enough. When I'm outside the intermountain west, I hardly ever see buffalo on a menu or in a grocery. Too bad. Very good meat.

This is good news. The native vote is a force in many states and could be much more so if a candidate really courted them. There was a good GOTV drive in SD last year to help Tim Johnson. And, of course, the repugs screamed "fraud" but couldn't prove anything. With so many Indian veterans, I'm not at all surprised that Clark would be their choice.

8. Registration drive!
Democrats need to make sure more Native Americans are registered to vote, and of course get them to the polls next November. It could turn New Mexico, Arizona and other states to the Democratic column in a close election.

See page 18 of the January/February issue of SIERRA magazine for a related article.

Native American values must be a part of our future if we are to live at peace with the land, our history, and each other.

13. I am impressed by this endorsement
Not surprised but impressed. Native Americans are notoriously patriotic ... so I can see why they are going for Clark. Perhaps this is not a bad idea considering some of the choices (excluding Dennis Kucinich that is!). :D
