Reuters photographer and driver killed in Iraq
Thu Jul 12, 2007 9:09AM EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - An Iraqi photographer and driver working
for Reuters in Iraq were killed in Baghdad on Thursday, the
international news and information company said.

Photographer Namir Noor-Eldeen, 22, and driver Saeed Chmagh,
40, were killed in eastern Baghdad at a time when clashes had
been taking place between U.S. forces and militants in the
area.

The cause of their deaths was unclear, although witnesses
spoke of an explosion in the area. Iraqi police said either a
U.S. air strike or a mortar attack had occurred.

The deaths take to six the number of Reuters employees killed
in Iraq since U.S.-led forces invaded the country in 2003 to
topple Saddam Hussein.

(Adds details)

LONDON, July 12 (Reuters) - An Iraqi photographer and driver working for Reuters in Iraq were killed in Baghdad on Thursday in what police said was American military action and which witnesses described as a helicopter attack.

Photographer Namir Noor-Eldeen, 22, and driver Saeed Chmagh, 40, were killed in eastern Baghdad, the international news and information company said.

The U.S. military said it was looking into the reports but had no immediate statement.

A preliminary police report obtained by Reuters said Noor-Eldeen and Chmagh had been killed by a "random American bombardment" that killed nine other people.

U.S Troops Raid Baghdad Shiite District
Capture Two Militants Believed Linked To Iran;
19 Killed, 20 Injured, Iraqi Officials Say

BAGHDAD, July 12, 2007

(AP) U.S. troops raided a Shiite area of Baghdad on Thursday,
capturing two militants believed linked to Iran and sparking
a battle that Iraqi officials said killed 19 people. Two
employees of the Reuters news agency were among the dead.

Angry residents of the Amin district — many of them Shiites
who fled to Baghdad from Baqouba, where U.S. troops are
waging an offensive against insurgents — accused U.S.
helicopters of striking buildings during the fight with gunmen
and killing civilians. The U.S. military did not immediately
comment on the fighting.

Among the dead were at least one woman and two children,
and some of the men slain appeared to have been armed
and firing on the Americans, Iraqi police and hospital
officials said.
