Small fire at MIA airport

Smoke and flames can be seen from the structure which is under construction, unoccupied and not in use, according to authorities. CNN is reporting the tower would be used for airport gate assignments.

CNN also says the fire is not affecting flights in any way at the airport and there are no evacuations.

One of the old air control towers at Miami International Airport is on fire. The fire is being put out by firefighters. I work at the airport and I will load pictures as soon as I get some. It has not hit the news yet. Since it is a secondary tower, the airport is not closed and planes are still landing ( I just heard a jet land )

I used to deliver airfreight all around the west side of MIA back in the late 70's - early 80's back before that Air Cargo complex was built.

My son works at ATL. I never had reason to ask if they have something like that, but I will!

6. Fire started by spilled tar!

Miami, FL (AHN) - One construction worker was injured Wednesday after fire broke out at a private ground traffic control tower at Miami International Airport (MIA). According to authorities, the worker was taken to hospital with minor burns, and his injuries were non-life threatening.

The blaze broke out Wednesday morning after roofers working at the upper deck of the tower accidentally spilled a tar pot which eventually caught fire. "When the tar spills out and touches any combustible material, the heat from that tar which is extra hot, can cause a fire," Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Lt. Elkin Sierra said.

The fire appeared to be confined to the domed upper deck of the under-construction ramp control tower, which is being readied for American Airlines. The control tower will be used for directing the arriving planes to their assigned passenger gates.
