Roadside bombs in Iraq kill 7 troops
Source: AP

By BUSHRA JUHI, Associated Press Writer 4 minutes ago

BAGHDAD - Roadside bombs killed seven American troops in Iraq on Saturday, including four in a single strike outside Baghdad, the military said, as U.S. and Iraqi troops captured two senior al-Qaida militants in Diyala province.

Separately, a predawn operation by U.S. forces working with Iraqi informants in Baghdad's main Shiite district of Sadr City netted three other militants suspected of ties to Iran, the military said.

The Americans have accused Iran of providing mainly Shiite militias with training and powerful roadside bombs known as explosively formed projectiles, or EFPs, that have killed hundreds of U.S. troops in recent months.

Roadside bombs, including EFPs and other makeshift devices used by Sunni and Shiite militants alike, are the No. 1 killer of foreign troops in Iraq and Saturday's deaths were no exception.

There was enough money sloshing around the Pentagon for at least until August for Iraq anyway. :-(

28. This a done a week after the Dems took the oath of office
Bush is playing on the fact that Congressional power is a war-hammer, not a rapier. Very powerful, but slow to swing and lacking precision. And the Democrats, having just picked up the war hammer, are still uncertain as to how to yield it.

There's enough money and authorizations floating around for things to last until the end of summer :-(

5. So I see our Iron Trap, our Huge Krushing Blow To Al Kader
has done pretty much nothing to end the insurgency. My guess is that the insurgents actually live in Iraq, have no place to go but Iraq, are not going to accept heathen foreigners swaggering around their land in their overstuffed storm trooper gear and cost-plus engineered vehicles, and consequently are going to continue killing us at every opportunity until we give up and go home. Our home, by the way, is not Iraq. We have options, they don't.

32. I am waiting for the emergence of a National Liberation Front that
brings together al Sadr's Mahdi Army militia and various Sunni resistance groups. That will be the next step in this sorry saga.

Remember that the National Liberation Front in the puppet regime of South Vietnam emerged after roughly six years of brutal policies by the forces of Ngo Dinh Diem. By my count, that means we'll need one more year of brutal, illegal occupation by the U.S. before a true Iragi NLF emerges.

Updated Sat. Jun. 23 2007 8:12 AM ET

Associated Press

KABUL, Afghanistan -- The U.S.-led coalition says one soldier is dead and two wounded during a clash in southern Afghanistan.

It says the soldier died this morning during combat operations near the village of Langar in Helmand Province.

Coalition forces came under small-arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire around 5:45 a.m. and immediately returned fire.

The nationalities of the soldiers, and the condition of those injured, has not been released.

13. The EFPs look relatively simple to me
Seems experienced Sunni bomb makers could fabricate the EFPs fairly easily. Especially if the copper plate is smuggled in from, say, Saudi Arabia. The rest of the bomb is just a pipe and C4, a big pipe bomb.

A simple weapon that is really only effective in built up areas, which is why maneuver warfare was developed around the concept of staying out of built up areas. Occupation is a whole different animal.

Maybe Iran is supplying them like they seem to be pumping. However, Juan Cole is dubious that Shia Iran would be supplying Sunni insurgents, and he has pointed out that the vast majority of US casualties are in Sunni areas. I trust Juan Cole more than our compromised military leadership at this point.

From the wiki

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Explosively_formed_penetrator

Use in improvised explosive devices

EFPs have been used in improvised explosive devices against armoured cars, for example in the 1989 assassination of the German banker Alfred Herrhausen (attributed<5> to the Red Army Faction), and by the Hezbollah in the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict. A recent development is their widespread introduction in IEDs by insurgents in Iraq<6>.

The charges are generally cylindrical, fabricated from commonly available metal pipe, with the forward end closed by a concave copper or steel disk-shaped liner to create a shaped charge. Explosive is loaded behind the metal liner to fill the pipe. Upon detonation, the explosive projects the liner to form a projectile at a velocity well over 1 km/s, depending on the design and type of explosive used.

Often mounted on crash barriers at window level, they are placed along roadsides at choke points where vehicles must slow down, such as intersections and junctions. This gives the operator time to judge the moment to fire, when the vehicle is moving more slowly<7>.

Detonation is controlled by cable, radio control (RC), or remote arming with passive IR (PIR) trigger. EFPs can be deployed singly, in pairs, or in arrays, depending on the tactical situation.

20. I agree
Blaming Iranians is just a stunt to try to justify an attack on Iran. Before the war we were told the iraqis had the know how to make nuclear and chemical weapons but now we are suppose to believe the Iraqi insurgents are incapable of making effective IED's so it must be Iran? As I recall before all the turmoil in Iraq, the Iraqis had one of the most educated societies in the middle east. America need to admit that they fucked with the wrong country, the Iraqi insurgency is sophisticated and the western coalition has no answer for it.

26. Thank you for posting all the pictures. Please continue to do so.
Pictures deserve a thread of their own. Please post pictures when you can. It really helps, is very painful to see it all personalized. A picture of a 19 yr old is what got me involved much more actively. Thanks for posting these. Damn, bunch of kids and a few adults (not to denigrate any of them, but I consider anyone under 25 a kid, I am getting old). RIP all.

36. I have all 3500 posted on my website
I add them as fast as I can find them. Usually the same day the name is released; some take weeks.

The link is in my signature below. Save the link and visit whenever you wish.

For the past several months, there is a "slideshow" option that just runs thru the pics for the month - about 3-4 seconds each.

24. Faux News site stories: Missing woman, Red Bull for illegals, lost ring returned after 40 years
If you look down the page carefully, very carefully, you will find the losses in Iraq - in fact, anything about Iraq - buried. I see from Editor & Publisher that Bill O'Lielly just addressed a convention of journalists about why they are hated (he said they are left wing secular progressives, of course). What are they thinking?

When are the gutless wonders in the media going to call Faux News on the fraud they perpetrate? How can Faux News get away with shifting the ground when they won't even report on the war in Iraq anymore? And why is Bill O'Lielly invited anywhere that decent people congregate?

Is Keith Olbermann totally alone in truth telling? It just doesn't seem to matter how outrageous it gets anymore; the bad guys like Faux always win. I am sick of it.

27. FOX Noise Station, what a joke
"And why is Bill O'Lielly invited anywhere that decent people congregate?"...

That's a great question....Did you see the other day when Keith tore him to pieces....O'Lielly was going off on how NBC spent 2 minutes talking about the 7 kids killed in Afganistan....Then Bill Orally went off on how he covers stories that matter to you...Then Keith showed the silly stories (entertainment nature) that Bill O covered in just the LAST WEEK....Then when Countdown ended & he signed off to Dan Abrams, who was guest hosting for Joe S, Dan had a great line (paraphrasing) "Yeah, why cover Iraq/Afganistan stories as it will only be the #1 issue in the 2008 election"..

29. Fox Noise is a disgraceful organization
They were the number one cheerleaders for pushing this war, then once it goes bad they think they can just wash their blood stained hands of it. That's one pathetic organization.

25. Start a new God Damn pile, and pile 'em higher

Grass Bush

Pile the bodies high in Austerlitz and Waterloo Iraq
Shovel them under and let me work--
I am the grass; bush; I cover all.

And pile them high in Gettyburg Baghdad
And pile them high in Ypres and Vedum Mossoul and Al Fallaujah

Two years, ten years, and passengers ask the conductor:
What place is this?

I am the grass bush.
Let me work.

At Least 30 Americans Killed In Iraq
Most Of Deaths Come From Roadside Bombs

BAGHDAD -- Another rough week is ending in Iraq as American forces press an offensive against al-Qaida-linked militants.

At least 30 Americans have died in the past week, most of them from roadside bombs. Four soldiers were killed in a single blast Saturday near Baghdad. Three others died in bomb blasts elsewhere. One soldier was killed when his patrol was hit by small-arms fire. Two others died in what are classified as non-combat incidents.

A recent surge in bomb attacks that kill several soldiers at once is seen as an indicator that militants are using larger bombs, including so-called explosively formed penetrators. The U.S. claims those EFPs are coming from Iran.
