Lynne Cheney, Susan Thomas floated as possible replacements for late Sen. Craig Thomas
Source: The Politico

Lynne Cheney, wife of Vice President Dick Cheney, is being floated in Senate GOP leadership circles as a possible replacement for the late Sen. Craig Thomas (R-Wyo.), who died Monday night. Susan Thomas, the late senator's wife, has also been mentioned by Senate Republicans as a potential choice to take over for her husband, as well as former Justice Department official Tom Sansonetti.

One GOP insider said Lynne Cheney had been in Washington "too long" to be acceptable to the Wyoming GOP, despite her long resume, although that would change if Cheney were to return to Wyoming on a full-time basis. Susan Thomas is reportedly not interested in serving out her husband's term.

15. I agree...
I have a similar feeling when I think of the fact that we could have another Clinton in office as well. However, I feel like somewhat of a hypocrite saying that since Hillary is on the top of my list for '08...

18. Lineages in politics are not a good thing
I hate the idea that the best qualified candidates for office would be the children or relatives of those who have already held the office. It amazes me how many people feel that the offspring of a former leader should be the new leader. It is almost as if they desire a monarchy of lineage based government.

With that said, I take a less strict view of this with regard to Hillary. That is because she is not a blood relative of Bill, she is his spouse. I find it a lot more reasonable to believe that someone who is an intelligent, qualified leader could choose someone of a similar caliber as a spouse. It is a subtle difference, but it is significant to me.

With that said, Hillary is not my candidate of choice (not trying to persuade anyone one way or another here, just stating it as fact). But the fact that she is family by marriage, not by birth at least reduces the whole lineage thing in my mind.

2. So they have no one.
Lynne ain't acceptable (and what a polite way of putting it), and Susan doesn't want it. That's not floating. That's sinking.

24. DO it -
am I crazy in thinking she is probably the least electable name they could come up with? Even in Wyoming...

Cheney's approval rating is appalling - it's worse than Bush's. This would be a prime seat to target in 2008. There's no way Cheney will be any popular than he is now, so I can't see that making it any easier for his wife to hold to seat.

3. Seems like a waste of effort - The Governor is making the final decision
so why put up someone who probably isn't going to get picked on general principle anyway (Cheney)?

...that the state GOP party will choose the three names they submit to Gov Dave, and these rumors from DC are just that....DC rumors. It'll all happen in Wyoming.

9. Oh good grief!
I wish their system allowed the Gov to simply appoint who he wills. Wouldn't it be great to see a Dem there?

Lynne Cheney {{{{shudder}}}}

11. I actually like Wyoming's system
The seat should be filled by a member of the same party as the deceased Senator. The voters of Wyoming put a Republican in that seat and they deserve one. We'd be screaming bloody murder if a Dem was replaced by a Republican, against the will of the people.

19. You do know that Wyoming is starting to get a tad purple?
A friend of a friend is active in Wyoming politics as a Republican. When we run across each other we inevitably talk politics (believe it or not there are still some Republicans you can talk to). He admitted to me a year or two ago that the Democrats were making major inroads in Wyoming politics, and that this worried him and the Wyoming GOP.

(Of course I also heard from my friend that said sane Wyoming GOPer, after a bit of soul searching, in the privacy of the voting booth voted a straight Democratic ticket in 2006 :))

21. It is indeed turning a light purple
Especially since 6 members of my family - all Democrats - moved here. Every Dem helps.

For years many Wyoming Democrats have registered as Repubs in order to have a vote in the primaries. It is pretty rare to have a Dem contest in a primary, but the Repubs run in large numbers.

Being able to vote in a primary is not sufficient reason, imo, to register as a Repuke. We are trying to stop this practice and have the Dems come out of the closet, so to speak, and register as Dems, but it is an uphill battle.

16. Isn't that Lynne Cheney awful ambitious?
But I guess being ambitious is OK for Republican women but not for Democratic women such as Hillary.

Gotta love that ole double standard the media exercises!

Also, did Lynne Cheney stay at home when her children were in school? Will Mary Cheney do the good Republican thing and foresake her career and stay at home for the new Cheney spawn?

it has not yet been rumored that one of the Simpson sons may be on the short list.

GOPers around here genuflect whenever the name Simpson is mentioned.
