No confidence resolution introduced in the House of Representatives; Top Republican won't rule out support

by Michael Roston

Two Democratic Members of Congress who previously served as Assistant United States Attorneys have formally introduced a 'no confidence' resolution in the House of Representatives against Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, RAW STORY has learned.

"Resolved: That the House of Representatives and the American people have lost confidence in Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, and urge the President to request his resignation and to nominate a new candidate more capable of serving as head of the Department of Justice," reads the resolution that was introduced Monday morning by Reps. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Artur Davis (D-AL), a copy of which was e-mailed to RAW STORY.

The office of one top Republican in the House wouldn't rule out his support for the measure.

"[Rep. Adam Putnam (R-FL)] is on the record saying Mr Gonzales did not address congressional concerns during his earlier testimony and he believes he should resign. He has not had the opportunity to review the proposal you mentioned," said a spokesman for Putnam, who chairs the Republican conference and is the number three leader in the House minority leadership.

4. I'm not impressed unless this has actual teeth.
I'm tired of symbolic sparring. If this is the equivalent of impeachment for cabinet members, then I am quite happy, but something tells me they would call it "Impeachment" if it was. Enough already. What in the hell has to happen to illicit ACTUAL consequences from the democratic congress!!?

6. Perhaps this is a prelude...
Better to test the waters first. If they find they have overwhelming support, they may go ahead with impeachment proceedings.

11. Senator Schumer is counting the votes
If they can get a "no-confidence" vote, impeachment is on the table. I also noticed that Mr. Whitehouse was very circumspectly questioning Mr. Comey about obstruction of justice.

They're not going forward till they are sure.

Bush defends Gonzales, rips into critics

By Thomas Ferraro 1 hour, 20 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -
President George W. Bush on Monday accused Democrats in Congress who are seeking no-confidence votes on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales of engaging in "pure political theater."
.................
"I stand by Al Gonzales," Bush said.

Bush added that the attorney general's critics "ought to get the job done of passing legislation as opposed to figuring how to be actors on the political theater stage."

Busy legislative schedules will likely prevent Senate or House votes on the resolutions until next month, aides said.

Didn't Bush stand behind Rummy right up to the day he fired him? Bush's word is worthless, always has been.

10. It is a matter of time for his resignation...Karl's time
The refusal of Gonzo to resign has bought yet another two
months for this administration as they continue to throw one
at a time under the bus. Rove’s masterful tactic’s by keeping
everyone’s eye off the ball still works. I think time will
expire before we can get to the true three criminals to
impeach/fire.

Edited on Mon May-21-07 08:20 PM by Doughboy71
Bush has already had too many high ranking officials getting into trouble that he can't really afford another embarrasment. In the end it may not matter, Gonzo will figure a way to quit. Not like it will hurt W's approval ratings.

Bush will ignore like he's ignored everything else. Impeach Gonzales or arrest him, but this is kind of lame.

26. Agreed
Although it is nice to see a stand by Congress, it is toothless. Bush has demonstrated time and again that he has complete disdain for Congress and will give them the symbolic finger.

Don't give me meaningless "no confidence" resolutions - give me justice. Give me impeachment. Only impeachment will show me that the Congress really means business.
