Yolanda King, daughter of MLK, dies at 51
Source: CNN.com

Yolanda Denise King, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s eldest child who pursued her father's dream of racial harmony through acting and motivational speaking, has died. She was 51.

King died late Tuesday in Santa Monica, California, said Steve Klein, a spokesman for the King Center. The family did not know the cause of death but that relatives think it might have been a heart problem, he said.

Born on November 17, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, King was just an infant when her home was bombed during the turbulent civil rights era.

As an actress, she appeared in numerous films, including "Ghosts of Mississippi," and even played Rosa Parks in the 1978 miniseries "King."

My kids heard her speak recently -- they were thrilled to have that connection to MLK, and she was very inspirational.

12. This is a terrible loss...
That family had so much talent. I once heard MLK III give a speech at a rally about 25 years ago, and he had his father's gift of eloquence. Unfortunately I haven't heard about him much lately, wonder what he's doing now?

RIP Yolanda.

Pat Robertson must be shi*ting himself right now.

But seriously, this is a loss. A HUGE LOSS! She's not a homophobe like her sister Bernice.

Daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. dies
By ERRIN HAINES
Associated Press Writer

Daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. dies

Yolanda King, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s eldest child who pursued her father's dream of racial harmony through drama and motivational speaking, collapsed and died. She was 51.

King died late Tuesday in Santa Monica, Calif., said Steve Klein, a spokesman for the King Center. The family did not know the cause of death, but relatives think it might have been a heart problem, he said.

"She was an actress, author, producer, advocate for peace and nonviolence, who was known and loved for her motivational and inspirational contributions to society," the King family said in a statement.

Former Mayor Andrew Young, a lieutenant of her father's who has remained close to the family, said King was going to her brother Dexter's home when she collapsed in the doorway.

24. Yesterday, I posted a poll on how long the media will talk about Foulwell...
...I can guess just how long they'll spend on Yolanda's death. It's a damn shame, 'cause her life meant so, so much more than Foulwell.

33. A painful and sobering day
Yolanda was not a classmate, or a friend, but she was one of my generation. She inherited and promoted a legacy of compassion and advocacy from two outstanding parents.

I admired her from when I was a child. I am just shocked to learn of her passing. This is gut-wrenching awful.

RIP Yoki.
