Five months later, 3 prosecutors still want truth about firings
By GENE JOHNSON
AP LEGAL AFFAIRS WRITER

SEATTLE -- Five months after they were fired, three former U.S. attorneys told a law school audience Wednesday they still don't know why they were targeted.

And they don't expect to be illuminated when U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales begins his second round of congressional testimony Thursday.

"I just hope I don't hear the words 'I don't recall' coming from his mouth very often," said David Iglesias, former U.S. attorney in New Mexico.

Iglesias appeared on a Seattle University Law School panel with Paul Charlton, former U.S. attorney in Arizona, and John McKay, the former U.S. attorney in Western Washington, to discuss the roles and responsibilities of federal prosecutors.

McKay: Time For Special Prosecutor
Updated: 6.45 pm Pacific

Speaking at a public policy symposium in Seattle, former United States Attorney John McKay said "yes" when asked if he thought it was time for a special prosecutor to investigate the firing of eight U.S. Attorneys (USAs). "I think enough information has come out -- enough evidence has come out to suggest something inappropriate" happened. He said we need an independent look at whether a crime was committed.
On 7 December 2006, the US Department of Justice fired eight USAs, an unprecedented act according to the legal community. Subsequently, McKay stated, the Bush Administration has not been able to "factually answer consistently ... what has gone on here."

There are current investigations ongoing by Congress and the Office of Special Counsel, noted McKay and former US Attorney David Iglesias.

When asked what they hoped to hear from Attorney General Gonzales on Thursday, McKay said, simply, "the truth." Iglesias, perhaps with a touch of cynicism, added: "I just hope I don't hear 'I don't recall' coming from his mouth very often."
