Restaurant Pulls Hamburgers After Injury

BY SUSANNE M. SCHAFER
Associated Press Writer

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Cracker Barrel and a hamburger supplier were investigating after a patron in South Carolina reported cutting her mouth on a piece of metal embedded in a patty, causing the chain to pull burgers from hundreds of restaurants.

The chain has not confirmed what the object was, but it removed from more than 300 restaurants burgers that were produced on or around the same date as those served in the Myrtle Beach restaurant where the woman was cut, said Julie Davis, spokeswoman for the Lebanon, Tenn.-based restaurants. "We are putting out a wide net," Davis said Tuesday. "We are taking this very seriously."

The burgers - which are delivered to the restaurants frozen and pre-formed - came from Cargill Meat Solutions of Wichita, Kan., which is the chain's largest burger supplier, Davis said.

"We're working to gather the information needed to come to a solid conclusion in this matter," said Mark Klein, a spokesman for Cargill's meat businesses. "No one should be jumping to conclusions until the investigation is concluded."

Myrtle Beach police said Irene Grann, 56, was taken to a hospital Saturday night after she began bleeding from her mouth. She complained that something was stuck in her throat after eating part of a burger, police said. The restaurant manager collected a half-eaten hamburger from Grann's table and told police he took a piece of a razor blade from the middle of the patty, according to a police report.

8. Maybe the Karma fairy was getting a two-fer, there?
For all we know, the victim coulda been a cruel, rotten meanie, eating in an historically racist restaurant!

I won't eat in one of those places, given their record. And I don't care if they've "changed"--I just find that kind of shit too reprehensible. Not that I went LOOKING for one of them before I knew what they were about; but their lousy record has made me consciously eschew them.

16. A meat solution is actually kinda neat, if you're in foodservice
Instead of dealing with one company for your beef, one for your pork, one for your poultry and still another for your preserved meats--hams, cold cuts, that sort of thing--you call Cargill Meat Solutions and they bring out everything you need on one truck.

The "solutions" are to your meat procurement problems, not water with powdered meat stirred into it.

6. Indeed. I don't want a "meat solution" I want a HAMBURGER!
I've never had a hamburger at CB's, mostly because they insist on cooking them well-done, but also because I prefer to cook my own burgers. It doesn't surprise me to find the burgers are "industrial".

These guys are constantly trying out new names (they were called Excel when I worked there years back).

Whoever came up with that one should be fired.

4. That happened to me at Cracker Barrel a couple years ago
Edited on Wed May-09-07 08:16 AM by bigworld
Had a burger, found a piece of metal in it. It looked like a long piece from one of those heavy duty stainless steel scrubbies. Told the manager and didn't even get a freebie. Fuckers.

I can't believe they made you pay for it!

Be careful where and what you eat, peeps. Mass production of corporatewhore food can be lethal.

15. What a difference on-site USDA inspectors make....
many years ago I worked in a Turkey Processing Plant. The USDA inspectors discovered the girl "basting" the turkeys had broken the needle off at some point during her shift. She was hung over and didn't want to deal with getting in trouble so she just pretended to baste turkeys for a time.

USDA pulled every turkey off the line. They company struck a deal with a local hospital and x-rayed Turkeys until the cost of x-ray was exceeding anticipated profits. No found needle...no Turkeys to market...the entire run was condemed and dumped.

The USDA inspectors were always on top of everything. Too bad it ain't the way things work now (...as a side note the company managed to post profits even back in the oversight days)
