Eleven workers fired after wildcat strikes - 04/23/07

Two weeks after a unauthorized strike at Freightliner LLC in North Carolina, eleven workers have been fired. 700 workers represented by the United Auto Workers Local 3520 walked off the job demanding higher pay and safer working conditions. The strike put the local at odds with the International union. UAW International leadership had warned against any strike action as a majority of workers at the company’s other plants had approved a contract all ready on the table. The local contended that the plant in Cleveland, North Carolina is the companies most profitable, but the workers are the least paid. Freightliner is currently investing $400 million into Mexico.
