"A former senior executive with the U.S. government's anti-Castro TV station was sentenced Wednesday to 27 months in prison for accepting more than $100,000 in kickbacks from a company doing business with the station, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
Miami-based U.S. District Court Judge Federico Moreno also ordered Jose M. Miranda to pay $8,000 in fines. His prison sentence will be followed by three years of probation. Miranda was fired from the station after he pleaded guilty in February.
The U.S. government seeks to beam Radio and TV Marti into Cuba to provide an alternative to the government-run media.
Miranda was the director of programming for TV Marti between 1999 and 2004 and earned $103,000 from the Office of Cuba Broadcasting, which oversees the station. During that time, he accepted at least $112,000 from Perfect Image Film and Video Productions, while also approving requisitions and invoices for services the company rendered for the station.
According to in-court statements made during the plea, the owner of Perfect Image agreed Miranda would receive a portion of the money the company received from TV Marti. That sum totaled roughly 50 percent of the amount TV Marti paid the company, prosecutors said."
