Israeli professor, (Holocaust Survivor) killed in US attack (helping students escape classroom)
Source: The Jerusalem Post

As Jews worldwide honored on Monday the memory of those who were murdered in the Holocaust, a 75-year-old survivor sacrificed his life to save his students in Monday's shooting at Virginia Tech College that left 32 dead and over two dozen wounded.

Professor Liviu Librescu, 76, threw himself in front of the shooter, who had attempted to enter his classroom. The Israeli mechanics and engineering lecturer was shot to death, "but all the students lived - because of him," Virginia Tech student Asael Arad - also an Israeli - told Army Radio.

Several of Librescu's other students sent e-mails to his wife, Marlena, telling of how he blocked the gunman's way and saved their lives, said the son, Joe.

<snip>

"My father blocked the doorway with his body and asked the students to flee," Joe Librescu said in a telephone interview from his home outside of Tel Aviv. "Students started opening windows and jumping out."

<snip>

Librescu was sent to a labor camp in Russia as a child and saved by the townspeople. His father was deported by the Nazis.

81. That would make sense.
Both of his sons have names that are associated wtih "lion" in Hebrew.

And, I might add, what a lion that man was!

109. This is incorrect.
Liviu is not related to "lion" and Librescu comes from "book". This is what my Romanian speaking wife tells me.

I forgot to credit it back to the source, but most folks know Schindler's List. Who knew that a little kid saved would one day save more young people.

Reminds me of another movie It's a Wonderful Life. Harry Bailey didn't save all those guys on the ships because George wasn't around to save Harry when he was young.

He used his life well.

65. Its what the Schindler Jews had inscribed on the ring
I couldn't understand it at first- it sounded like "he who saves a life saves the world in time" but then I realized it was "entire" and it made a lot more sense.

What a beautiful man.

He survived the Holocaust so he COULD die like this. He died for something precious. Who knows what all those students will accomplish? Knowing that someone sacrificed their life will help them remember to choose wisely.

92. I happen to see it this way: Everything that man went through, all
the horrible experiences he endured, served to give him the inner strength that he would need on THIS day. He was born for a reason. He survived the death camps for a reason. He survived the reign of Ceacescu for a reason. And yesterday we all got to see what that reason was.

There's a special place in heaven for people like him.

In a perfect world we would ALL take our personal tragedies and tribulations and use them to become our best selves. He passed through the flames again and again, and was hammered repeatedly, and he came out the other side pure steel.

He learned from his time during the Holocaust... Evil can't be reasoned with, and it's never safe to assume that an armed person with a grudge doesn't intend to carry out his threat.

I can't think of a better way to ensure that this extraordinary act of heroism never will be forgotten.

In the inevitable screenplays that will be written and filmed, I hope Librescu's history of survival and heroism will get much attention. IMO, the world needs to know more about what makes men like Librescu tick.

138. Petition Online for Renaming Norris Hall To Librescu Hall
My name is Justin Kozuch, I am the owner of a Facebook group memorializing Dr. Liviu Librescu who died on Monday morning. The group can be found at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2317683565. We have setup a petition calling for the renaming of Norris Hall to Librescu Hall. The petition can be found at http://www.petitiononline.com/04172007/petition.html

I was curious to see if I could engage your help in sending out a message to your group members. We are looking for current VT students and faculty to help co-ordinate a committee to start the renaming process. If you would be so kind to do this for me, I would be most grateful. I have included some copy below.

===

Dear Students & Faculty of Virginia Tech,

I would like to offer my most sincere condolences to all of you who have had a difficult week coming to grips with the events of Monday morning. A nation, nay, a world of sympathetic citizens stands behinds you and supports you during this time of grief and despair. Many of you have lost friends, fellow classmates and professors, and we grieve your losses side by side with you. Your show of unity which began on Tuesday morning is truly exemplary, and everyone the world over is VERY proud of you. Today, you have truly a nation of Hokies!

I am posting this to garner interest in a cause I have been working on for the past few days. I have setup a petition to have Norris Hall renamed to Librescu Hall to honor Dr. Librescu and his heroic actions that saved the lives of his students. (http://www.petitiononline.com/04172007/petition.html)

I am interested in speaking with current VT students who are interested in sitting on a committee to help co-ordinate the process of renaming Norris Hall. If you are interested in helping out, I can be reached on MSN/GoogleTalk at [email protected]. You can also message me on Facebook if you don't have access to an IM client. We also have a Facebook group setup for this petition at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2317683565

Thank you for your time,

Justin Kozuch

84. Perhaps.
And if he had been carrying a knife, he might have stabbed him. And if he had been carrying a . . . whatever, he could have used it. But he was armed with something a lot more powerful: His character, his courage, his heart, and his love.

Is that the world you really want to live in, a world where a family has to budget to arm all its members with guns and ammunition, along with the oil changes for the car, groceries, and shoelaces? To have to walk around wearing weapons on a daily basis, always looking over your shoulder, always suspicious of everyone you meet? Is that a world worth living in?

We would do much better to arm our children with Professor Librescu's powerful weapons, and then use them daily against intolerace, poverty, disease, mental illness, ignorance, and all the other scourges of mankind.

137. Why not a taser?
I wouldn't like to see guns be standard issue for college professors, but some more minor type of weapon like a taser or some other non-lethal weapon. It's something that should be debated.

But more importantly I think colleges should have a debate about how they deal with students who are obviously troubled. I don't want to have us become a police state where big brother is looking over our shoulder and turning in people who deviate from a narrow definition of the norm, but we have to pay attention to troubled young people.

In our culture we teach people to bury their heads and/or run.

They left him to die. Oh wait, he was old, so he had lived a full life so he was expendable. He told them to run while he tried to hold the door. The dorr was succesfully held in the other room by a group of students who acted.

from Ishwar K. Puri, the Dean of Virginia Tech's Engineering Science and Mechanics department.

Also from that article, "Liviu Librescu was born in Romania, Puri said, but his quest for freedom brought him to the United States. Students on Monday described his attempts to barricade his classroom door while they jumped from a window to safety."

80. I've Often Wondered What I would have done during the Holocaust
I'm currently reading a book about the hundreds of people throughout Europe who risked their lives to save Jewish people during the Holocaust. These people were literally risking their own lives and those of their families. If they were caught, they would also be sent to the concentration camps. In fact, about 40% of the people killed in Concentration Camps were not Jews. The biggest threat was being turned in by your neighbors. There actually were few Gestapo agents in most areas - they depended upon snitches (some paid and some just anti-Semitic) to maintain their terror.

I've been wondering what I would do in that situation - as a gentile while my neighbors were being rounded up in the Holocaust. Would I have been willing to hide someone for years? I might have been willing to risk my own life, but I am pretty sure I would not have been willing to risk the lives of my own kids.

Now, today we read about a man in the reversed situation.

101. that's so cool! he sounds like my calculus prof ...
My prof's colleagues used to tease him because he preferred chalkboards over the new whiteboards (and newfangled stuff like PowerPoint) -- the next person coming into the room to teach would invariably frown at the copious smudges of chalk. Needless to say, he could teach ALL of them under the table.

When I started teaching, I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to handle it, if the overhead projector went out, or I couldn't get the computer to boot up. Then I remembered my prof, and I wasn't as scared, because he always seemed to find a way through. Now I will think about Prof. Librescu too!

He sounds like an awesome teacher. You've written a beautiful tribute to him. Thanks so much for sharing your stories ... I hope that you will find peace in the days to come.

100. A terrible and wonderful story at the same time
We all die eventually, but this person chose to die a hero. After what he'd seen in his youth, he deserved to die of old age, peacefully and selfishly in his own bed, with loved ones around him. Instead, he thought about the lives of others. What a wonderful, heroic individual. I don't think I could have possibly been that selfless if confronted with the same situation.

Edited on Tue Apr-17-07 06:12 PM by Up2Late

When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won.

There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it--always.

Mahatma Gandhi
Indian political and spiritual leader (1869 - 1948) <http://www.quotationspage.com/quote/33237.html>

Arthur Ashe once said "True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost."

He was an inspiration to those kids, and should be one to all of us. He will be so missed.

Some people's lives truly inspire awe. In saving the lives of others, it is as if he saved the whole world, as the saying goes. They will have children and their children will have children, all of whom would never have been born had he not saved the lives of those students.

In the Librescu family's profound grief, I hope they are as profoundly proud of their father.
