Gunmen kill senior Iraqi official in Baghdad

Unknown gunmen shot dead a senior Electricity Ministry official in eastern Baghdad on Wednesday, an Interior Ministry source said.

"Hashim Abdul Abbas Hallawi, a director general in the Ministry of Electricity, was gunned down by unknown gunmen while his convoy was traveling in the al-Qanat Street on the way to his work," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

His driver was also killed in the attack, the source added.

Separately, two people were wounded when U.S. military vehicles ran over three civilian cars in the Ghadeer neighborhood in eastern the capital, according to the source.

1. Iraqi mom and son killed in crossfire, roadside bomb wounds 13

Mosul - An Iraqi mother and her school-age son were killed on Wednesday in crossfire between police officers and gunmen in the country's third city of Mosul, police said.

Major Mohammed Ahmed said the incident happened in a western suburb of Mosul, one week after Iraqi security forces and US troops extended a massive security crackdown in Baghdad to the sprawling northern city.

A roadside bomb also ripped through a police patrol in Mosul's central Al-Shifa district, wounding 13 people, including three police officers, police said.

2. Raging Battle in Baghdad Leaves 24 Dead
Bodies lay scattered across two central Baghdad neighborhoods Wednesday after a raging battle that left 20 suspected insurgents and four Iraqi soldiers dead, and 16 U.S. soldiers wounded, witnesses and officials said.

The fighting in Fadhil and Sheik Omar, two Sunni enclaves, was the most intense since a massive push to pacify the capital began two months ago.

Iraqi soldiers held a security cordon around Fadhil on Wednesday, and residents hid frightened in their homes, a witness told The Associated Press by telephone, on condition of anonymity out of fear for his safety.

The Muslim Scholars Association, a Sunni group, issued a statement quoting witnesses as saying Tuesday's battle began after Iraqi troops entered a mosque and executed two young men in front of other worshippers. Ground forces used tear gas on civilians, it said.

``The association condemns this horrible crime carried out by occupiers and the government,'' the statement said.

4. The sheer amount of variation in the "same" story is
stunning.

Two executed in front of worshipers in a mosque during morning prayers.

Two executed in an outdoor vegetable market.
