Elizabeth Edwards Gets Some Good News
Source: NYT

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- Elizabeth Edwards said Tuesday that she got some good news: She has a type of cancer that is more likely to be controlled by anti-estrogen drugs.

Mrs. Edwards, wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, expressed frustration with reports that she's likely to die within five years. She said doctors can't give her a reliable life expectancy and even if they could, the information would be of no comfort to her.

''I don't care,'' she said in an interview with The Associated Press as she campaigned with her husband. ''I'm going to fight exactly as hard if they tell me that I've got 15 years or if I've got 30 years. I'm still going to fight to get rid of this -- if they tell me I've got 15 minutes I'm still going to fight. It doesn't matter what the prognosis is. So it's not an important piece of information to me.''

The Edwardses announced nearly two weeks ago that her breast cancer had returned and spread to her bone. They said they had no intention of ending his bid because doctors told her that although she's likely to die from the disease eventually, the campaign wouldn't interfere with her treatment.

1. That Is Good News
Although a part of me understands the urge, overall I think the tendency to speculate on how long Elizabeth Edwards has is kind of ghoulish.

5. Who knows within her time span there will be a discovery to either
cure her or increase her life span.

But only if a Democrat is elected President and Congress that won't reduce funding for cancer research.

6. Mrs. Edwards is just awesome
And she is absolutely right that no one can pinpoint life expectancy. I've seen too many people live long beyond "the date." And I hope she is yet another.

7. Another DUer speculated about this about a week ago.
And was soundly pounced on for it, unfortunately, by those who assumed the worst about the prognosis. This is probably the best possible news she could've received, and I'm very happy/relieved to hear about this.

10. my brother-in-law
had kidney cancer metastasize and turn up in both lungs. Generally considered not treatable, at the time the best shot was immune system stimulation, which had a track record of getting one out of three in his condition past six months, with the successes generally not more than a year or two.

There were some new meds coming along; he was turned down for one clinical trial because he'd had a kidney removed from the initial cancer years earlier, but one of the other meds got approved for general use and he got on it. About 3-4 months had elapsed by then. That was two years ago, and his CT scans show only slight scar tissue from the biggest three of the tumors, the rest - a dozen or so, completely gone.

As I said to him when the diagnosis first came down, "Bill, the odds don't mean a thing. If one in a thousand make it, all you need to is to be the one. If someone gave you a lottery ticket, would you tear it up before the drawing because the odds are poor?"

Elizabeth Edwards has the perfect attitude, and that is a big part of fighting this thing.

So you go, girl.

12. Good news! A brave and respectable woman!
Her best line, which would be a great motto for all, "I'm going to fight exactly as hard if they tell me that I've got 15 years or if I've got 30 years. I'm still going to fight to get rid of this -- if they tell me I've got 15 minutes I'm still going to fight."

She is a real inspiration!

13. Anytime I hear about cancer, I think about my grandmother
Who was sent home to die 30 years ago. She had colon cancer. She has outlived all her doctors, my grandfather and all but one of her eight sons.
