DOJ agrees on transcribed interviews with House committee

Rep. Conyers is chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A spokesman for House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, D-Michigan, said the committee has reached an agreement with the Department of Justice that will make available seven DOJ officials for transcribed interviews behind closed doors.

The officials will be interviewed about the process used in firing eight U.S. attorneys late last year. The Senate Judiciary Committee heard testimony on the matter Thursday from Kyle Sampson, former chief of staff for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

The interviews begin Friday with Michael Elston, chief of staff to Deputy Attorney General Paul J. McNulty. Elston is the only one of the seven scheduled so far.

The others on the list are McNulty, Associate Deputy Attorney General David Margolis; director of the Executive Office for United States Attorneys Michael Battle; Monica Goodling, the DOJ's liaison to the White House; acting Associate Attorney General William Mercer; and Assistant Attorney General William Moschella.

Justice officials go to Hill for questioning as White House backs Gonzales anew

Friday, March 30, 2007 - Updated: 01:19 PM EST

WASHINGTON -- Congress pursued more details from another senior Justice Department official Friday in the firing of federal prosecutors and inconsistencies in Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’ account of it as the White House predicted Gonzales will survive.

~snip~

House and Senate investigators spent hours behind closed doors Friday interviewing Michael Elston, chief of staff to Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty, about inconsistencies in Gonzales’ account of his role in the firings of eight federal prosecutors.

Gonzales’ former chief of staff, Kyle Sampson, on Thursday told the Senate Judiciary Committee during five hours of testimony that the attorney general, rather than merely signing off on the firings as Gonzales has claimed, was involved several steps along the way.

Elston and three officials -- a personal lawyer and Justice Department aides -- entered the House Judiciary Committee’s suite just after 10 a.m. EDT Friday for what aides predicted would be five hours of interviews. Elston was not expected to be sworn during Friday’s interview, but he has agreed to testify voluntarily under oath and in public.
