Pentagon Is Probing Veterans Home
Source: WaPo

Reports of a rising death rate and rooms spattered with blood, urine and feces at the Armed Forces Retirement Home prompted the Pentagon yesterday to begin investigating conditions at the veterans facility in Northwest Washington.

The Government Accountability Office warned the Pentagon this week that residents of the home "may be at risk" in light of allegations of severe health-care problems. Residents have been admitted to Walter Reed Army Medical Center with "the most serious type of pressure sores" and, in one case, with maggots in a wound, according to a GAO letter sent to the Defense Department.
...
The reports came from medical personnel who treat residents at the historic veterans home, formerly known as the U.S. Soldiers' and Airmen's Home. The facility, run by an independent federal agency under the jurisdiction of the Department of Defense, is home to more than 1,100 enlisted retirees, many of them veterans of World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
...
In addition, the home received an influx of veterans after Hurricane Katrina damaged a sister institution for Navy veterans in Gulfport, Miss. Cox said the Washington home now has 150 residents requiring assisted living, twice as many as before the hurricane.

reports are going to be worse then Walter Reed. Some of the reports made me sick. Nurses beating older vets. Doctors called and not showing up for a day. Folks laying in there stuff for hours. Beds sores on 100s. Meds being given only wrong ones.Veterans homes across the Country unexplained deaths. Like I said after the Reed story broke tip of the ice berg

6. Pentagon investigating vets retirement home Allegations of rooms spattered with blood, urine, feces
Source: MSNBC/AP

In the latest allegations of poor treatment for veterans, the Pentagon said Thursday it is investigating conditions at a veterans retirement home in the capital.

A medical team went for an inspection Wednesday after Defense Secretary Robert Gates got a letter from congressional investigators about allegations of a rising death rate and rooms spattered with blood, urine and feces at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington.

The letter also cited allegations of an increase in the rates of residents who are sent to hospitals and a case in which a veteran had a bedsore with maggots in the wound.

“We are going to take every complaint, and we are going to address it,” said Maj. Stewart T. Upton, a Defense Department spokesman.

7. Adding this tidbit from article - this also has a relation to Katrina
Busloads of veterans escaping hurricane-devastated Mississippi were brought to the home in September 2005 after Hurricane Katrina pounded its sister facility in Gulfport.
