Senator says he won't yield to any outside pressures

WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

In his heart, Sen. Chuck Hagel says, he doesn't feel it yet.

He believes that if he had even inched toward running for president on Monday, it would have overwhelmed everything else.

Forget trying to push legislation addressing the big issues facing the nation, such as the war in Iraq, immigration, health care and energy.

"If I jumped in this thing now, everything would be focused on one thing," Hagel said, pinching his thumb and finger close together.

2. Attendance
If he continues to call news conferences to announce that he is just thinking things over, attendance is likely to drop off.
