Saddam's Translator: Hollywood Style Capture
http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/4EE6DA5A-B989-4739-B494-FA3110A9AAA4.htm

<snip>
In his first interview with Middle Eastern media after Saddam was captured, Dr Saman Abd al-Majid told Aljazeera.net that Saddam could implicate the US and Britain in his crimes.

Dr Saman was referring to international complicity in building up Saddam's war machine which was then used devastatingly against the Iranians and his own people.

"I do not believe that he would be tried publicly. He has nothing to lose and he would say everything if he was tried," he said.

"He knows a lot of things that could damage international relations - he knows crucial secrets. I don't think that a public trial is in the interest of any of the countries that launched the war on Iraq.

1. the tap dancing
...to keep Saddam from talking will be a marvel to behold. This can only serve to further alienate relationships with most Middle Eastern countries.

5. Some "crazed Iranian or Kurd" will kill him before any trial or during the
trial before his testimony. That's the way special ops have planned it I believe.

7. Fox this morning call-in:Saddam crazy or crafty?
I know I know I shouldn't watch Fox but until I saw this thread/article I thought they were just making fun of him. No apparently they are going to paint him as crazy so no matter what he says 'Murkans will just pass it off as crazy rants.

IS he crazy? I don't know but most of the Saddam "esperts" I've seen on TV say no he is just evil.

13. For me it was so long ago...

that I'd swear it was still a living language.

;) I'm a fine one to talk (type at any rate), with Latin as with English, I can't get ANY of my plural forms correct...

15. Sorry to be so pedestrian, but this quote is too good to keep obscure.

He who keeps silent is assumed to consent.

Let us always remember this.

That's why the media barely covered yesterday's speech - at least not the part about transparency needed - which eas the point of the speech:

11. From an article I posted in GD...
The Bush administration has no intention of allowing any court that is not under it's unrestricted control to bring Hussein to trial. Having revoked a previous treaty committing US support for the International Criminal Court, it is determined to not legitimize any such body. It justifiably fears that Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Tommy Franks and others could someday be brought before such a tribunal on war crimes charges stemming from the war of aggression against Iraq and the deaths of tens of thousands of Iraqi citizens.

14. With all due respect,
the ICC should not even be considered when discussing this issue. I am glad that we revoked our plans to join the ICC.

18. "With all due respect"...
This isn't a discussion about the ICFI! At least they report the news without pandering to Republicans...which is a damn sight more than I can say for the US media!

What's the problem with the ICC?

We know that the current regime in DC doesn't like it.

20. Picky comment
Dr. Saman is most likely an interpreter of spoken language rather than a translator of written documents.

These are two different jobs requiring two different sets of talents.

The press gets this wrong most of the time.

Signed,
Lydia Leftcoast
(who actually is a translator and not an interpreter)
