Equatorial Guinea coup plotter battles extradition

A former British SAS officer who led a failed attempt to mount a coup in Equatorial Guinea is having to fight an attempt by the West African nation to have him extradited.

Simon Mann is due to be released from a Zimbabwean jail in May after serving part of a four-year term for a plot that also involved Sir Mark Thatcher, the son of Baroness <Maggie> Thatcher ...

“There is no guarantee that Simon Mann will get a fair trial,” Jonathan Samkange told the court. “Equatorial Guinea has never been known to give its own citizens a fair trial. What we have there is martial law. My client’s co-accused were never given a fair trial. How can the same authorities give my client a fair trial?"

Mann has been in jail in Zimbabwe since 2004 after being convicted of trying to buy weapons as part of a bid to topple Teodoro Obiang Nguema, Equatorial Guinea's veteran president ...
