Bush: Iraq plan on course
Edited on Wed Feb-14-07 12:11 PM by maddezmom
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Iraq is fulfilling its commitment to increase troops and security in Baghdad, President Bush said Wednesday.

In his first news conference in two months, Bush said Iraqi insurgents will do all they can to "undermine the Maliki government and its Baghdad security plan."

"These are people that will kill innocent men, women and children to achieve their objective, which is to discourage the Iraqi people, to foment sectarian violence -- and to, frankly, discourage us from helping" the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki do its job, Bush said.

Bush said insurgents are also trying hard to turn American public opinion against the war.

"They're all aimed at, frankly, causing people here in America to say it's not worth it," Bush said of insurgent attacks.

Bush: U.S. troops counting on Congress

WASHINGTON — President Bush shrugged off congressional debate on a resolution opposing his Iraq policy Wednesday but said U.S. troops there are counting on lawmakers to provide them with what they need to win.

~snip~

"They have every right to express their opposition and it is a nonbinding resolution," he said of the House members, who were continuing a marathon Iraq policy debate on Capitol Hill even as he spoke.

At the same time, Bush said that Congress would soon be voting on a bill that did matter, one providing emergency funding for the Iraq war. "Our troops are counting on their elected leaders in Washington D.C. to provide them with the support they need to do their mission," he said.

In his first news conference since Dec. 20, Bush said he received a briefing earlier in the day from Iraq from newly-confirmed Gen. David Petraeus, the new chief commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, who is now in Baghdad.

US backs away from linking Iran govt to Iraq chaos(but Bush doesn't)

BAGHDAD, Feb 14 (Reuters) - The United States backed away on Wednesday from a U.S. official's comments implicating Iran's government in arming Iraqi militants and said it was not trying to "hype" evidence of Iranian weapons being used in Iraq.

President George W. Bush said he did not know if Iran's leaders ordered members of the Quds Force of Iran's Revolutionary Guards to provide improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to militias in Iraq.

"What we do know is that the Quds Force was instrumental in providing these deadly IEDs to networks inside of Iraq," he said. "What we don't know is whether or not the head leaders of Iran ordered the Quds Force to do what they did."

Bush calls on Congress to fund U.S. troops to Iraq

WASHINGTON, Feb 14 (Reuters) - President George W. Bush said on Wednesday that the U.S. Congress must fund the additional troops he is sending to Iraq as part of a strategy that Democrats, who are in the majority, and some Republicans have opposed.

"I make it very clear to the members of Congress, starting now, that they need to fund our troops and they need to make sure we have the flexibility necessary to get the job done," Bush said at a press conference. His plan sends 21,500 additional troops to Iraq, mostly to bring security to Baghdad.

8. Bush on Iraq civil war: Hard to give assessment 'Living in this beautiful White House'
(ALSO says he will 'recycle' reporter who asked about CIA leak -- transcript at link)

"President Bush said Wednesday he's convinced that the Iranian government is supplying deadly weapons to fighters in Iraq, even if he can't prove the orders came from the highest levels in Tehran," the Associated Press is reporting.

"I can say with certainty that the Quds Force, a part of the Iranian government, has provided these sophisticated IEDs that have harmed our troops," Bush said. "I do not know whether or not the Quds Force was ordered from the top echelons of government."

"But here's my point: either they knew or didn't know, and what matters is is that they're there. What's worse -- that the government knew or that the government didn't know?" he added.

Bush's statements comes on the heels of comments from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Pace, who downplayed claims that Iranian leaders were behind the supplies, but did say that insurgents were getting weapons from Iranian sources.

Asked by an ABC reporter whether he thought Iraq was roiled by civil war, Bush said, "It's hard for me living in this beautiful White House to give you an assessment, a first hand assessment. I haven't been there. You have, I haven't. But I do talk to people who are and people whose judgment I trust and they would not qualify it as that. There are others who think it is."

Bush: Iran Supplying Weapons in Iraq
Bush Insists Iran Is Supplying Deadly Weapons to Fighters in Iraq

WASHINGTON Feb 14, 2007 (AP)— President Bush said Wednesday he's convinced that the Iranian government is supplying deadly weapons to fighters in Iraq, even if he can't prove the orders came from the highest levels in Tehran.

More important, Bush said in his first news conference of the year, is protecting U.S. troops against the lethal new threat. "I'm going to do something about it," Bush said.

...

Bush said he could say "with certainty" that the weapons were provided by an elite part of Iran's Revolutionary Guards that is part of the government.

But, the president added, he does not know whether the weapons were "ordered from the top echelons of government. But, my point is, what's worse, them ordering it and it happening, or them not ordering it and it happening?"

Sure. No proof, no evidence, but we should believe him just 'cause he says so.

Like we should believe him about Sadr hiding out in Iran, too.

Or believe anything else coming out of the White House.

I'm going to do something about it," Bush said.

When you say "you" are going to "do something" could you possibly be more presidential? Are we just along for the ride, or do we deserve a heads up on whether or not you are committing what's left of this great nation to a regional war in the middle east? Are "you" going to be shot out of a cannon, kind of personal responsibility here, or are you going to use our air force to attack yet another nation? Were there any follow up questions on this?

NRA says "Guns don't kill people, people kill people". Maybe we should extend the protections the gun companies get from being sued to Iran, after all, Iranians aren't pulling the triggers.

But wait! We didn't say that Saddam caused 9/11.

Sorry, but I've heard this song before.

This time: Iranian leaders, EFP's, Iranian leaders, EFP's, but wait...

Again BushCo accuses a foreign government of killing Americans and then
tries to squirm away when pressed for proof.

The Iraq war propaganda campaign is almost complete. It only lacks
a "Curveball" figure and maybe a prominent exile of Chalibi's stature.
