CNN: Republican U.S. Rep. Charlie Norwood of Georgia has died
Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 02:04 PM by brooklynite
Republican U.S. Rep. Charlie Norwood of Georgia has died after a long battle with cancer, his office announced today. He was 65.

http://cnn.com

From Wikipedia:

Charles Whitlow (Charlie) Norwood, Jr. (July 27, 1941 - February 13, 2007) was an American politician and has been a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives since 1995, represented the 9th District of Georgia. (map).

Norwood was born in Valdosta, Georgia, was educated at Georgia Southern University and Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and was a dentist before entering the House.

Norwood served as a Captain in the United States Army from 1967 from 1969, beginning with an assignment to the U.S. Army Dental Corps at Sandia Army Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 1968 he was transferred to the Medical Battalion of the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam, and served a combat tour at Quin Yon, An Khe, and LZ English at Bon Son. During his tour, he participated in experimental military dental practices that are now standard procedure for the armed forces. Norwood was one of the first participants in the Army's outreach program that delivered dentists to forward firebases in lieu of transferring patients to rear treatment areas. He also provided some of the first field-based dental treatment of military guard dogs, and assisted in non-dental trauma care in Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals.

In recognition of his service under combat conditions, Norwood was awarded the Combat Medical Badge and two Bronze Stars. After Vietnam, Norwood was assigned to the Dental Corps at Fort Gordon, Georgia, where he served until his discharge in 1969. He remains a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Military Order of the World Wars.

In 2004, Norwood received 74 percent of the vote against Democratic candidate Bob Ellis. In 2006, he received 68 percent of the vote against Democratic candidate Terry Holley.

15. Not really, he just gave up his treatment last week.
He announced last week he was retiring to Georgia and putting the matter "in God's hands."

He was re-elected, but was very sick. He performed some of his duties this year, but not many, from what I understand.

21. Georgia Congressman Norwood dies
http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/02/13/norwood.obit.ap/index.html

Rep. Charles Norwood Jr., a seven-term Republican congressman from Georgia, died Tuesday after battling cancer and lung disease. He was 65.
Norwood died at his home in Augusta, Georgia, early Tuesday afternoon, his office said. The House interrupted debate on an Iraq war resolution for a moment of silence in his honor.
Norwood suffered from a chronic lung disease and later developed metastatic cancer that spread from his lung to his liver. He had declined further treatment last week and returned home to Georgia to receive hospice care. Once the governor declares Norwood's seat vacant, he has a limited period in which to call a special, nonpartisan election.

Rep. Charlie Norwood loses cancer battle
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Rep. Charlie Norwood, R-Georgia, died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer, his office announced.

He was 65.

Norwood was battling idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and non-small cell lung cancer, according to a statement released from his office.

The congressman decided to forgo further treatment last week, electing to return home to Georgia for hospice care.

The schedule of public services will be announced when Georgia's 10th Congressional district office finalizes the plans, according to the statement.

Norwood has represented Georgia's 10th district since 1995 and easily won reelection last November.

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Florida, announced Norwood's passing on the House floor and asked for a moment of silence.

During his State of the Union Address last month, President Bush asked members of Congress to pray for the health of Norwood and Sen. Tim Johnson, the South Dakota Democrat who suffered a brain hemorrhage in December.

39. A friend of mine with cancer hates that headline "loses".
She said she doesn't want to be thought of as "a loser" when her time is up.

I know, it os only a figure of speech, but I wish we had another way to express it. I think I'll ask around.

51. Actually, election no SOONER than 30 days after.
Here's the code section, 21-2-543:

Whenever a vacancy shall occur or exist in the office of Representative in the United States Congress from this state the Governor shall issue, within ten days after the occurrence of such vacancy, a writ of election to the Secretary of State for a special election to fill such vacancy, which election shall be held on the date named in the writ, which shall not be less than 30 days after its issuance. Upon receiving the writ of election from the Governor, the Secretary of State shall then transmit the writ of election to the superintendent of each county involved and shall publish the call of the election.

It could probably happen on that 40th day, but that is the earliest day it could happen, not the latest.

I can only imagine the scurrilous attacks that occur if, say, Rep. Rangel died.

And my condolences go out to a fellow veteran and the family he reluctantly leaves behind for the last time.

UM Congressional Representatives Accept Funds from Sin Industries

Despite the stand on the UMC on gambling, tobacco, fire arms, and alcohol, 57 of the 61 UMs in Congress have accepted campaign contributions from these "sin" industries.ÿ20 Common Cause recently detailed how these four industries have given $268.2 million in campaign contributions and lobbying expenditures since 1989.

....

Rep. Charlie Norwood (R-Ga.), at $56,000, and Rep. Frederick Boucher (D-Va.) at $50,200, took the most money from the tobacco industry. Rep. Barr took the most from the gun lobby. Second highest was Sen. Sam Sessions (R-Ala.), at $74,666.
