Police patrol riot-hit Bangalore, IT firms operate
Mon Jan 22, 2007 2:41 PM IST

BANGALORE (Reuters) - Police were deployed and schools shut in Bangalore on Monday after communal rioting between Hindus and Muslims left a 12-year-old boy dead and dozens of people hurt.

Protests by thousands of Muslims against last month's execution of Saddam Hussein in Iraq sparked a chain of violence over the weekend between minority Muslims and nationalist Hindus, police and witnesses said.

Riot police patrolled empty streets of downtown Bangalore on Monday but operations in the city's numerous software firms and call centres, mostly outside the city centre, were unaffected.

"We are working. There is no change in our schedule," said a spokeswoman for Infosys Technologies Ltd., India's second-largest software exporter.

<snip> "Bangalore as it is has problems of infrastructure and power and we don't require another problem like this to affect its image."

2. Yikes. My husband had to go to Infosys last year to train some
of their employees. Glad he's not there now.

Outsourcers mostly unaffected by Bangalore riots

January 22, 2007 (IDG News Service) -- IT outsourcing companies in Bangalore, India, said they were largely unaffected by rioting in the city over the weekend, although some took the precaution of rerouting staff transportation routes.

The riots between Muslims and Hindus, which started Friday, caused damage to property and led to the death of one person. A procession by Muslims on Friday, to protest the hanging of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, turned violent as Muslims attacked Hindu establishments. On Sunday, a Hindu mob retaliated against Muslims in the area.

But the rioting was confined to a volatile sector of downtown Bangalore where outsourcing and IT companies do not have operations. Most of the companies have their facilities in the suburbs, where land is relatively cheap.

"We are working as usual, and our operations were not affected," a spokeswoman at Infosys Technologies Ltd. said Monday. Infosys, India's second largest outsourcer, has its headquarters and large operations in Bangalore.
