Clark stumps Tennessee, presses health care

By DUNCAN MANSFIELD / Associated Press Writer

KNOXVILLE (AP) — Wesley Clark accepted a University of Tennessee football jersey and a warm reception at a rally Friday as he promoted health care as part of his "turnaround plan for America."

"Man, we need him. I think he is great," said Donald Joiner, 78, a retiree who attended the rally.
"What Clark brings to the race in my view is that he appeals to a broad cross section of Americans," said Don Nalls, 47, a financial planner. "There are Republicans here tonight. There are retired military guys here tonight."
It was Clark's second trip to Knoxville. He addressed a Truman Day dinner on Sept. 13, just days before announcing his candidacy.
"I just want to say how important Tennessee is to me," Clark, who lived in Tennessee for a year when he was in high school, told a news conference after the rally. "This is a state I want to win in the primary and carry in the general election."
Tennessee voters go to the polls Feb. 10, with early voting beginning Jan. 21. Clark is one of 10 candidates on the Democratic ballot.
"I think it is wide open. I think Tennessee is still undecided," said Randy Button, state Democratic chairman.
Clark seemed unfazed by Tennessean Al Gore's endorsement this week of Vermont Gov. Howard Dean. "I don't pay attention to endorsements, unless they are for me," he said with a smile.
