Nancy Pelosi officially elected Speaker of the House
per C-SPAN. The votes are in, have been counted, re-counted, re-re-counted, et cetera for several more "re"s I'm sure, and the gavel has been struck.

"The honorable Nancy Pelosi of the state of California is to be elected Speaker of the House for the 110th Congress, having received a majority of the votes cast." And I swear, the clerk's voice was breaking up as she said it. :)

57. Just place your cursor over the picture and right click on it.
You should have the option to "save picture as" and the option to "email picture", either of those should get you started.

Hope this helps.

58. Right click on the picture and save it to your hard drive, then...
...attach it to an email and send it to your office address. At the office, open the email and right click on the picture, again, and save it to the hard drive on your office computer. Then close or minimize all windows and right click on your desktop. Select "properties" then choose the "desktop" tab. Click "browse" to find and select the picture from your hard drive. After you've selected the picture, click "position" and select "center," "tile," or "stretch" (on my screen, "stretch" works best for this picture). Then click "apply" and the picture should appear on your desktop. Then click "ok."

113. Actually it was more than her grandkids. She had asked the
children all to come up to touch the gavel and went on with the agenda with them all up there. Most gradually left and her grandkids were sent away with their mother or nana.

95. I woke up with a smile - and the first thing I heard was the repukes whining about their new
circumstances - then it turned into a shit-eating grin!

Loved all the complaining - but especially loved the bit where NPR - at almost every instance of reporting the repukes' whining - reminded everyone that that the repukes were afraid of being treated like THEY treated the Democrats for that past 12 years!

Sweet!

28. Boehner fired the first salvo of dissension by calling
us the Democrat Party. So much for working in unison if he hurls an insult at us in his very first speech. I know it's not a mistake. It was a deliberate code phrase to us telling us that the "Republic Party" still considers us crap.

... as it fills the undies of wingnuts all over America. San Francisco values are coming, bed-wetters! Your marriages will be annulled by the homosexual elite, your children will be forced to have anal sex in public schools, and abortions will be mandatory for all pregnant white women who aren't on welfare!

Edit:
I think the clerk's voice was "breaking up" when she called it because Dick Cheney was choking her.

37. Personally, I thought she looked very Presidential
Just my humble opinion!

The whole thing had an air of a State of the Union address.

My five year old stopped and said, "Who is that." I told her it was the new Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi and that she was the most powerful woman in our nation, as well as one of the most powerful people. I told her that the new Speaker was 2nd in line to be President and controlled the very important task of making laws and ensuring oversight. I said that she was the first woman in our history to ever be put in that position. I told her that it was an important day and that I was proud to be a Democrat and an American today.

My five year old said, "Oh look! Children!"

Oh, well....give her a few years and she'll understand what Daddy said!

72. I Hope She Doesn't Forget What Got Her There - IRAQ
If she forgets how she got there, she wont be there long. The American people issued a mandate--get out of Iraq. Cleaning up Congress is fine, but Iraq must come first.

80. Anyone who makes a Republican sick to his stomach...
Is alright by me!

I've been voting for Pelosi since maybe 1980 or so. Have to check the Wikipedia source. Soon after i moved to San Francisco anyway. that was back in 1978.

And that was only a month and a half before DiFi's career got born at the barrel of a handgun.

S/F politics: It's not for the faint of heart!

82. Much ado about nothing
I will be excited when I see some action.
Outside of Murtha, Feingold and a few others no democrats want to talk about Iraq.
They all say the ball is in the Presidents court and we have to wait and see his new plan.
They are more concerned about being perceived as week going into '08 than about doing what needs
to be done. If your going to wait on Bush then we are going to be waiting for two more years
to end the war. Its time to have the courage of their convictions and grab the bull by the horns and
put Iraq on the front burner. I fear they will only have hearings on tv to throw us "Kooks" a bone for
are support and then go back to the DlC defensive playbook of not offending anyone.
I realize I sound a little cynical, but after seeing the interviews of Democrats and hearing them
trying to change the subject to safe issues like ethics reform I was disappointed to say the least.
It's time to grab the reins and lead!
It's time to have the courage of their convictions!

84. What a wonderful way to start out the year!
What was a dream a while ago has come true - we now have a Congress that is human! No more complete control for the Repukes. No more ignoring international law. This Congress, instead of approving lining the pockets of corporations while our soldiers die, will work towards real solutions for ending the Iraq crisis. The middle class will have a say. Ethics rules will become tighter. A brand new Congress and day!

93. Watched it on CSPAN. Awesome.
Now on to the first 100 hours! Time to see if republicans and Bush himself get the message the American people sent him in the last mid-term elections. I doubt it. We are still going to have to fight this psychopath every step of the way.

Here is to hoping Democrats have the balls to do some serious investigations, and to de-fund this fiasco.

12 long years and yes this is a wonderful day.

Soon we will see our soldiers out of Iraq, and hopefully she will put the republicans feet to the fire.

We can renew the Assault weapon Ban and truly make our country safe for our children.

We can finally raise the minimum wage and get people back on their feet, yes this is the beginning to a great year!!!!

108. Historical day for the U.S.
I am so glad to be a witness to this momentous change of history today. The first day of the 110th congress and the Democrats have made history by electing the FIRST woman to the position of Speaker of the House! She is an inspiration to all women who live under the glass/marble ceiling. It can be done!
