Critic Takes Over Lieberman's Party

The party Sen. Joe Lieberman created to mount his independent re-election campaign has been seized by one of his critics, and the secretary of state's office said Wednesday that it won't challenge the takeover.

After the senator's Nov. 7 victory under the Connecticut for Lieberman Party banner, John Orman switched his party affiliation from Democrat to Connecticut for Lieberman and voted himself chairman.

Orman, a political science professor who ran briefly against Lieberman last year, said only critics, bloggers and anyone named Lieberman can join the party, which he said would be a watchdog of the senator's actions.

Ted Bromley, a lawyer for the secretary of the state's office, said it won't take a stance on the legitimacy of Orman's leadership. He said the issue could be settled by a judge, but only if it's challenged in court.

Lieberman campaign manager Sherry Brown did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment Wednesday.

15. OK, it's funny, but what if Joementum switches parties?

If the Dems ostracize Lieberman too much, he just might cross over since he's 3/4 rebublican already. And that would hand control of the Senate back to Cheney. Best we hold our tongues until we get a bigger majority.

12. It's also really ironic -- what Lieberman did allowed the GOP to

manipulate OUR party (in its primary in CT), so now someone else has hijacked HIS party. Sounds fair to me.

Must be damned easy to create a political party in CT. Some states won't even let the Greens be a real party.

He won. He's still a Senator. Good for him.

But it was a really asshole thing to do to the party as a whole, and he should be ashamed of that at a minimum. I used to support him, but now can't even look at him without feeling a bit ill.

He used a republican tactic to siphon off votes from the Democrat that beat him in the Democratic primary election. Being from Texas I've seen the method used against Democrats too many times, but even here I've never witnessed it from within our own party.

How the Democrats can now trust him to caucus with them is beyond me.

16. I'm sure this bothers him not one whit. There's no rule that says you

have to stay in the "party" that elected you. For example, Jeffords, elected a Republican, resigned and became an independent. I'll bet that if you check the records next week, you'll find that Lieberman is officially a Democrat. In New York, candidates for statewide office typically run on multiple party line ballots.
