Iraqis are entering U.S. through Mexico
Iraqis are entering U.S. through Mexico
Most are Chaldeans; smuggling probed

TIJUANA – U.S. and Mexican immigration agencies are investigating the arrival of small groups of Iraqis at the border in the past week and their possible connection to smuggling organizations.

Baja California agents and Mexican federal immigration officers found a group of four Friday night at a Tijuana hotel. In addition, two groups of about two or three Iraqis turned themselves in earlier this week to U.S. inspectors at the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa ports of entry, asking for political asylum.

“We've continued to see a steady trickle of Iraqis coming into the United States through Mexico, requesting asylum once they're in the United States,” said Lauren Mack, spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in San Diego.

The vast majority of Iraqis who show up along the California border are members of the Chaldean Christian minority who are drawn by San Diego's sizable Chaldean community. Their numbers today are nowhere near those of six years ago, when Tijuana was a major transit point for Chaldeans trying to get to the United States.

15. They need to find out who they are before they let them cross. If
they are not Mexicans, they should be identified

2. There are half-a-million...
...Iraqis so tainted by association with our disastrous involvment in their country that when we leave, they will be faced with a choice of coffins or suitcases.

I expect that we will try to hang them out to dry, and then, reluctantly, admit them and treat them like shit.

Another way that Iraq is like Vietnam on crank.

11. Yes, but in this case their association is merely being
"Christian". No distinction is seen between sects and no need for any of the "collaborators" and "traitors" to actually ever have seen an American in Iraq or support what the US is doing in Iraq.

Welcome to communalism of a religious nature. It's fiercely condemned in the West, and frequently practiced elsewhere. What's strange is to see people who condemn it in the West try to justify it when it's done elsewhere.

12. The fate of the Nestorians...
...is separate, to some extent, from what I was mentioning.

Iraqi Christians, because they face a well-founded fear of death or persecution on religious grounds if they remain, should be a slam dunk under existing asylum laws -- the fact that we blew up their country, and did it in such a way that it was guaranteed from the get-go to make their predicament worse is just icing on the cake.

I was referring to the influx -- and we have to start thinking about it now, and not rely on the usual half-assed ad-hoc-ery that characterizes BushCo's approach to Mesopotamia, and everything else -- of our Iraqi drivers, translators, contractors, employees, etc, and their families out to about the second cousin level -- whose lives aren't worth a plug nickel once we bug out.

:argh:

ETA we already have about 25,000 Iraqi expatriates (including children born here) in San Diego County.

Almost every convenience store, liquor store, independent grocery store, and most of the pizza parlors within a few miles of my home are run by Chaldeans.

4. Interesting but not surprising. Where did we think all the refugees would
go?

The Sunnis and Shiites have neighboring Countries like themselves but where do the Christian Iraqis feel safe going?

5. This is new? Come on, we all knew that it wasn't just "mexicans" that crossed
the border. Stupid republicans, after 6 yars they finally figured out something we democratics knew for 50 years, at least.
