Two journalists in Iraq hurt in grenade attack (James Nachtwey!)
Edited on Fri Dec-12-03 05:21 AM by ze_dscherman
BAGHDAD, Iraq -- A senior reporter and a veteran photographer for Time magazine were wounded along with two U.S. soldiers when a grenade was tossed into their Humvee, the military and the magazine said Thursday.

Time senior correspondent Michael Weisskopf and contributing photographer James Nachtwey were traveling with a U.S. Army patrol in Baghdad on Wednesday night when the attack occurred, a statement from Time managing editor Jim Kelly said.

One of the journalists was severely wounded (added: Nachtwey) and the other was slightly injured. Time said both were in stable condition and awaiting transfer to a U.S. military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany.

Nachtwey is an award-winning photographer known for haunting images of war and poverty. He was the subject of a 2001 documentary, "War Photographer," which was nominated for an Academy Award. This year, he shared a $1 million Dan David prize for documenting "the apocalyptic events of our time."

On edit: German Spiegel Online quotes Time (no link found) that Weisskopf lost his right hand when he threw out a grenade that had landed in their humvee. Strong body armour saved his life. Nachtwey was badly hit by shrapnel, he is still unconscious.

7. I thought I recognized the name....
...that was a photograph of the South Tower of the World Trade Center as photographed northeast of, and through, the cross on St. Paul's Chapel.

5. Look like the freedom fighters are protecting their country
Against invading journalists. The grenade tossers must be very proud.

8. I guess you missed the part where we invaded their country...
...and the two journalists were in a humvee with two American soldiers. Additionally, it looks like you also missed the part where the journalists were "traveling with a U.S. Army patrol in Baghdad on Wednesday night".

And since the journalists were dressed like the soldiers, and they were traveling at night, how were the grenade-tossers supposed to know the difference?

9. "their" country?
I believe there are many more Iraqi fighting along side the Americans to take their country back from the criminals that have sneaked across the borders to create chaos and the Saddam thugs. I guess you missed the part where most Iraqi citizens want their country to succeed and have joined the Americans to see that it happens.

I can't join you in any excuse making for the throwing of grenades into vehicles no matter what honorable people are in the vehicle.

"most"

that means over 12 MILLION Iraqis, right?

care to cite something credible in defense of that assertion?

your swill goes down much better in Wonderland than amongst the sentient.

6. as much as I despise Michael Weiskopf...
...I was sad to hear this yesterday. It took a helluva lot of guts to pick up that live grenade and toss it out of the humvee, saving the others. I suppose it was gut instinct. The alternative was death. But it still is admirable. I salute him for that. (But if he goes off on the Democratic nominee, I'll be ripping him again.)
