CNN: Search for climbers now recovery effort

PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) -- The sheriff who has been leading the search for two climbers missing on Mount Hood said Wednesday that the effort is over, and it's now a "recovery effort."

Earlier in the day, family members held on to hope and Sheriff Joe Wampler personally flew a small plane over the mountain in a last-ditch attempt to spot them.

Friends and relatives of Brian Hall and Jerry "Nikko" Cooke flew over Oregon's tallest peak in what one searcher characterized as a "farewell flight."
