BREAKING CNN (Television): Executions suspended in Florida!
Edited on Fri Dec-15-06 03:45 PM by originalpckelly
Jeb Bush has suspended all further executions in Florida.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/12/15/diaz.execution.ap/ind...

"OCALA, Florida (AP) -- The execution of a convicted killer took 34 minutes -- twice as long as normal -- because officials botched the insertion of the needles that delivered the lethal chemicals, a medical examiner said Friday.

Gov. Jeb Bush responded to the findings by halting the signing of more death warrants until a commission he created to examine the state's lethal injection process completes its final report by March 1.

Dr. William Hamilton, who performed the autopsy, said the needles pierced Angel Nieves Diaz's veins and then went into soft tissue in his arms. The lethal chemicals are supposed to go directly into the veins.

Hamilton refused to say whether he thought Diaz died a painful death."

1. Who is giving these injections?
Any medical person should be able to tell when a vein has been blown for friggin sake.

3. A nurse in a hospital
once stuck a needle in my arm. W/i minutes my arm swoll up to twice it's size. (She had missed the vein.)

The nurse was crying as she tried to rectify the problem.

23. Similar experience here.
When I was about 10, I had some teeth extracted. The nurse missed my vein twice, which hurt. But then the dentist got pissed, so he grabbed my arm real tight (probably to make the veins bigger) and jabbed me with the needle. His reaction freaked me out even more than being used as a human pin cushion. But he got it right and before I could count to 10 I was out.

8. I'm not sure about this but I don't think doctors have anything to do with executions.
I believe that it's a direct and irrefutable incompatability with the whole Hippocratic oath. They probably get people with a relatively limited medical background. Or unscrupulous doctors.

17. It depends upon the state
Some states require that a physician be present to pronounce death.

19. The AMA has come out against it, as have the anesthesiologists.
It was in the news awhile ago. Doctors are refusing to help the state kill people, to use their knowledge to kill people. It's wrong on all levels. Florida said they'd use other trained officials, whatever that means.

22. The Hippocratic oath isn't always used anymore
A lot of medical schools stopped using it in the mid 70s. At some schools it is optional. So, that is not really a limiting factor in regards to a doctor administering the lethal injection.

4. Potassium chloride going into the veins is painful. I've had a
KCL drip when my K went too low after I gave birth and diuresed too quickly. It burns. I am not going to comment on what the convicted person may have felt, but my experienced is that it is painful.

11. A Bush without the death penalty is like Monet without a brush

12. Could this be political cover for Jeb Bush?
Edited on Fri Dec-15-06 04:58 PM by dogfacedboy
A few years ago, former IL Governor George Ryan emptied death row. Soon after, he was indicted in a corruption scandal. I've always believed he did this to put a shine on himself, and not for the right reasons.

"FLORIDA'S ELECTRIC CHAIR IN ITS PRESENT CONDITION CONSTITUTES CRUEL AND/OR UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT AND ITS
USE FOR EXECUTION IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL BECAUSE IT DOES NOT RESULT IN INSTANT DEATH, CREATES A RISK OF PAIN, AND INFLICTS SEVERE MUTILATION ON THE BODY OF THE CONDEMNED PRISONER." from FL Supreme court site
