Bush Drawing Called 'Hate Speech'
SAN FRANCISCO -- An award-winning drawing blaming President Bush for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks was pulled from a small-town exhibit over "insurance issues" after a businessman withdrew his $300 prize and called the piece a form of "hate speech."

Artist Chuck Bowden's drawing, "The Tactics of Tyrants Are Always Transparent," won second place in the Redwood Art Association's annual fall exhibit, held earlier this month in Eureka, Calif. In the 11-inch-by-14-inch drawing, a crown and halo-topped Bush stands on a grave, his hand dripping with blood as bodies fall to the ground from the World Trade Center towers in the distance.

Bowden called it a tribute to those who lost their lives in New York on Sept. 11, 2001, and he acknowledged the piece was meant to place blame for the attacks squarely on the shoulders of the president.

But the work upset at least one sponsor. After Bowden's piece was deemed the second place winner by the lone judge, it was quietly bubble-wrapped and stuffed into a closet while 193 other works were prepared for the exhibit's public opening.

"They shouldn't call it `open to art,'" Bowden said of the contest's original call for entries. "They should call it, `open to Republican art' or `open to closed-minded art.'"

8. artwork will be famous...like Guernica....this young artist is an

American hero....and now, like many dissentors, this work will be famous, and this artist's career will take off...

wish more young 'draftable' people would STAND UP...and show dissent using writings, theatre, artworks, poems, protest songs, signs, and more....

artists who STOOD UP in WW1, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, are now very famous, immortal....artists can lead the way for others....it's time now...

if not now, WHEN ???
if not YOU, who ????

16. Yes, that was an incredible thing to do
considering Picasso's Guernica is a depiction of fascism--ironic. We must cover up art by a master--a genius such as Picasso -- in order to propagandise the American people--and to tell lies that will be accepted as truth. This type of repression of art is typical of fascist regimes

Picasso's Guernica

19. Some idiot told me he reported me to the Secret Service after I placed
thie image on my website -

The big dummy misinterpreted an image as a threat and further misinterpreted a stylized Christian cross as the crosshairs of a scope (rifle, tele-, peri-, whatever).

The icing on the cake? He warned me that I could expect a knock on my door any day. Like, I HAVE A DOORBELL, DUH...

opening line, as you know, to "Moby Dick", the great American monkey-on-your-back story. Profit, obsession, paranoia, psychosis, personal vendetta, and it's extremely long. Thanks, Hermann Melville. I got it right next to "1984".

28. "Unprotected" (by the First Amendment) Hate Speech?
Edited on Thu Dec-11-03 10:01 PM by gulliver
Here they go again. We all know they are just spinning, but calling Bush criticism "hate speech" goes too far. They need to be asked if they are really saying they don't think people have the right to criticize Bush, however caustically. That'll shut 'em up. (Except for the Ashcroftians who genuinely want to deny free speech to their critics.)

Edited on Thu Dec-11-03 11:09 PM by pinto
I hate it when you push some Stepford Jesus down my throat while you kill mentally ill children and call it justice. I hate it when you kow tow to an extremist faith and call it democracy. I hate it when you invoke the word of God, and say you have been called to your position by a deity. I hate it when you and your bible thumping cronies steal our country for your white, country club world, thinking that no third world colored folks will ever, ever make a difference. I hate it when you build so many walls we can't figure out which one is worse, and I hate it when we get so used to your walls we call them home.

"Freedom of speech is not a one-way street," Paul Bareis said. "A person has a right to paint what they want, and I have the right to not fund hate speech. I didn't want my business associated with someone's political thought."

Bareis also accused the Times-Standard of "trashing my business for your own political gain."

"What do you want me to do? Stop giving money to the community?" Bareis said.

Eureka Art and Frame, located at 1636 F St., has garnered several awards since it began in 1981 as Woodrose Fine Art. In 1998 the business was awarded the Preservation Award by the Eureka Heritage Society, and in 1999 Keep Eureka Beautiful gave the business its Award of Merit. In 2002, Eureka Art and Frame was chosen as the Best Framing Shop on the North Coast by Times-Standard readers. Most recently, the business won first place in Decor magazine's 100 Best Art and Framing Retailers Award.

37. IMO, it is a very poignant sculpture and it should have stayed....

it is a remembrance of what happened...and in it's own way, a memorial to the victims, so we don't forget....

where did it go to? it must be someplace....

it was under reaguns when art really began being censored...all kinds of artwork suddenly became unacceptable to the reagun-ites...

it's a shame really....here in DC, I would like to see some sculptures that are NOT military monuments...seems like that is most of what is here....and so many great artists, and only military monuments...sad...sad...maybe one day, we could honor something or someone besides war, war generals, and war...
