Edited on Sun Nov-26-06 09:08 AM by qanda
BAGHDAD, Iraq: Suspected Sunni-Arab insurgents hit a U.S. military post in eastern Baghdad with two mortar rounds Sunday, setting it on fire, police and witnesses said.

A large cloud of black smoke could be seen rising above the Baladiyat area of the capital area at about 3 p.m., but the U.S. military said it could not immediately confirm that its forces were the target of such an attack.

I've got a feeling things are about to get ugly.

I hope they have enough helicopters.

5. Who else would the target be if not the US military...
what a stupid statement by the US military. I would assume if the insurgents fired two mortar rounds into the US military post it was meant for us.

6. We don't have the time to wait for Bakers study or military options
it's time to go if we don't want it to be as bad as exiting Vietnam.

Or worse.

Thanks, George.

7. I wonder if every single mortar attack during Vietnam was reported like this.
I don't know since I was over there and not here watching the news but it seems unlikely as we were mortared several times a week and that was the rule rather than the exception in almost every camp. A few mortars were no big deal.. SOP so to speak. Sometimes I do think the Media makes a bigger deal out of things than they actually are and at the same time neglects to tell us about the really big stuff.

8. There's better communication technology now, and
there is a smaller US force to report on. Because the media is stuck in the greed zone, they have to take whatever news they can find.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Two mortar rounds hit a U.S. military post in eastern Baghdad on Sunday, setting it on fire, police and witnesses said. A large cloud of black smoke was seen rising above Baladiyat, a predominantly Shiite area of capital, at about 3 p.m.

Lt. Col. Scott Bleichwehl, a U.S. military spokesman, confirmed that "indirect fire rounds" had landed in the vicinity of the coalition forward operating base, but he refused to describe the results of the attack, saying that would allow "the enemy" to assess its effectiveness.

I found Col. Bleichwehl's quote very interesting.....

13. the enemy = Iraqis
now how fucked up is that? Here we have a good photo of the fire. I think "the enemy" can see the results pretty well. :eyes:

Smoke rises from the site of an explosion east of Baghdad. Rival neighborhoods lobbed mortar shells at each other in Baghdad with some hitting near a US base as the Iraqi prime minister appealed for calm in the increasingly violent country.(AFP/Joseph Eid)

14. All this smoke but no fire. Nothing hit. No one injured or killed.
Nothing to see here. Move along.
