Sept. 11 Dentist Charged With Perjury
November 16, 2006

NEW YORK -- The dentist in charge of identifying the teeth of Sept. 11 victims was arrested Thursday, accused of writing illegal prescriptions for his girlfriend and lying about it under oath.

Prosecutors said Jeffrey Burkes supplied his girlfriend with 80 prescriptions for drugs including Vicodin ES, Percocet, Hydrocodone and Endocet. He's also accused of administering Demerol, Brevatol and Valium to her intravenously.

Burkes, 58, led a team of volunteer forensic dentists that analyzed data of those killed in the World Trade Center attack. The oral surgeon, who is married, has been on unpaid leave from his position as chief forensic dental consultant in the city medical examiner's office since Nov. 4.

He pleaded not guilty in Manhattan's state Supreme Court to criminal sale of a prescription for a controlled substance, perjury, falsifying business records and tampering with physical evidence. Burkes and his lawyer left court without commenting.

Makes you wonder about all those teeth he identified, whether he really did the testing or did he just make it up has he went along?

1. Hydrocodone, Endocet and Percocet Are All The Same Drug!
Hydrocodone is the drug; Endocet is generic and Percocet is proprietary (so is Roxicet). I've had a lot of surgery. Really!

He wasn't taking the drugs; he was writing scripts for his mistress. Her identifications I wouldn't trust so much, but his are probably okay.

3. I thought oxycodone/acetaminophen was percocet.

4. You're Right - Endocet and Percocet are the Same; Hydrocodone is Vicodin
I'm as bad the original fact-checker!

5. Thanks.
Unfortunately, I have way too much familiarity with these drugs and wish I did not.

6. Same Here
I'm a kidney patient and I can't take NSAIDs. Some days I'd KILL for an Aleve.

Not to compare our situations, of course; or to make light of yours.
