Boxer pledges shift on global warming policy with new Senate role
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Sen. Barbara Boxer on Thursday promised major policy shifts on global warming, air quality and toxic-waste cleanup as she prepares to head the U.S. Senate's environmental committee.

"Time is running out, and we need to move forward on this," Boxer said of global warming during a conference call with reporters......

The California Democrat is one of the Senate's most liberal members and replaces one of the most conservative senators, Republican James Inhofe of Oklahoma. Inhofe had blocked bills seeking to cut the greenhouse gases contributing to global warming, calling the issue "the greatest hoax perpetrated on the American people."

Environmentalists were overjoyed at the change......

Boxer said she intends to introduce legislation to curb greenhouse gases, strengthen environmental laws regarding public health and hold oversight hearings on federal plans to clean up Superfund sites across the country.

1. I am *so* happy to see all this happen...
With the Repubs it's like, "okay we're elected and we'll get around to all the stuff..."

I've noticed confident Democrats coming out of the woodwork all of a sudden and seemingly begin assuming leadership almost instantaneously in different areas. It's like suddenly the Justice League walking into a bank robbery...Pelosi twirls around and she's in her Acqua suit...

It's almost like...they've had this planned...hmmm.

9. The Repub team started their nonstop destruction on Day One. I am SO glad the Dems are ...
...hitting the ground with both feet running. It's the only way we can ever hope to undo some of the massive damage that has been done to us.

3. Bush will veto this and Americans will be PISSED. This is just the beginning
of the popular and smart legislation that Bush will veto, laying the ground for our presidential victory in 08.

14. Yup, we've gone to the 11th hour, for sure. World Wildlife Fund gives the
planet 50 years. 50 years to the DEATH of the planet--at present levels of consumption/pollution. And they're a corporatist organization.

However, Mother Nature is VERY forgiving, and we are among her cleverest sentient creatures. If we just give her a chance--just STOP a couple of really bad things--She will turn the planet green and beautiful and life-enhancing once again.

1. Stop cutting down forests. (And start planting them.) (Not just for the air--also biological diversity, and clean water. Use alternative building materials, or recycled wood. And don't buy this crap about "green" forestry--which the WWF peddles. There is no such thing. STOP cutting down forests. Period. Fini! Make it a hanging offense!)

2. Stop pouring fossil fuels into the atmosphere. (FREE ENERGY FROM THE SUN. Lots of it. Enough for all our needs and then some. Just TAP INTO IT. Convert all machines to alternative, non-polluting fuels, or solar power.)

3. Stop letting global corporate predators write our laws and dictate our treaties.

Get tough with our own global corporate predators, and with China (the other big polluter). ALL industry and trade can be EASILY converted to non-polluting, green enterprise, but powerful global corporate predators are NOT going to do it willingly. Too much of it is run by overly powerful, radical profiteers. As Teddy Roosevelt said, "Speak softly but carry a BIG STICK." That "big stick" is government REGULATION and other DIRECT intervention in the marketplace. It HAS to be done. But it's going to take a number of strategies--which are all ultimately based on, a) the sovereignty of the people, and b) TRANSPARENT elections (the mechanism by which that sovereignty is exercised). We need wonder no longer WHY the Corporate Rulers have now grabbed DIRECT control of our election system with electronic voting machines, run on TRADE SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code. This is why. These corporate monopolies badly need to be busted up, so that REAL market forces--a truly free COMPETITIVE market--can take over. People WANT TO buy "green"--if they only had the choice. They WANT TO save the planet. SUV sales may not indicate that, but I think that is just bad leadership. If we didn't have an Oil Cartel in the White House, SUVs would never have been permitted, and the beguiling advertising to buy them would not have happened. It was a corporate profiteering thing. It was not a true marketplace! In a true marketplace, we would have had alternative fuel, non-polluting vehicles and other transportation twenty years ago. "Markets" are also markets for ideas. The IDEAS of "green" products were artificially suppressed. And this is where government intervention can put things right. Strong government is needed to counter the power of these immense corporations that dictate narrow choices, based solely on the monetary profit of the few, and that actively SUPPRESS vital information that can influence consumers. The situation is very out of balance. We, the People, through our government, need to intervene--and we have been prevented from doing so, by manipulated elections.

4. Stop increasing the human population, or...get off the planet.

Create biospheres in space. Terraform Mars. Colonize Titan. We really have no other choices, short of some big breakthrough in technology (I don't know...living in parallel universes? ...matter/energy converters for recycling EVERYTHING we use?). Myself? --I think it's time we started "greening" the solar system. (I don't like curtailing human freedom.) There may also be other technological solutions, but we'd better get on them fast. It's not just a matter of feeding people. It's a matter of living space--vastly increased human encroachment on all green places--and intense polluting and invasive industrial life. If we were all Buddhist monks, with a robe and a bowl as our only needs, we could significantly delay the planetary crisis. It's our consumer culture COMBINED with ever-increasing (exponentially!) population that is the problem. But we're not going to stop being traders and consumers any time soon. And even if we stopped all pollution tomorrow, we'd still be in trouble: human population vs livable space/& resources like water. We have also put severe stresses on the ocean fisheries, and if that food source dies off--as it is showing signs of--we may solve the population problem by watching half the human race die of starvation. Don't want that. Think positively. Everyone should be free to have children. And every human being is precious. Energize our brain power, our ingenuity, our vision. And figure this out.

15. I love you, Barbara. Al Gore was warning us in 1992 in his
Earth in the Balance. The trashing of rain forests not only limits the amount of oxygen which these wonderful living miracles pour into the the atmosphere to keep all life going, it also releases large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which the rain forests have stored in the ground beneath them.

What will James Inhofe and Michael Crichton say?
