Poll: Stumping not boosting Bush popularity (CNN Poll: 37%)
10/30/06

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush's popularity has not been buoyed
by a series of public events in recent days, a new CNN poll has found.

Bush's approval rating still hovers in the high 30s, where it has been
throughout October.

The poll, conducted by Opinion Research Corp., found that 37 percent of
Americans approve of how Bush is handling his job as president; 58 percent disapprove.

The president's approval dropped slightly from the poll taken a week earlier, from 39 percent down to 37 percent..

3. He only stumps to people who already agree with him
It's not a recipe for movement.

Preaching to the choir, as per usual.

Contrary to popular belief among the washington punditocracy, Bush's stumping has NEVER improved his popularity. Bush's popularity has only ever improved on the basis of outside events that would improve the popularity of any candidate or office-holder whatsoever(9/11, beginning of Iraq War, saddam's capture, GOP Convention, etc.). There has been a myth constructed around Bush that says when he goes out and talks to the people, his numbers improve. This is bullshit, and the long list of issues he has FAILED to convince people about (Social Security, Medicare, and, not least, The War in Iraq) only grows longer. They've finally decided that it is now transparently stupid to call him a "popular wartime president." He is decidedly unpopular, which means that most people don't like him. They've had to admit this much, because it has been widespread and consistent for over a year now. But they still pretend that when Bush goes out to speak, he magically communicates something special. He does not. The crowds look adoring because they are handpicked crowds of devoted hard-core Bush fans, not because he has anything special to say.

Needless to say, the right wing media will construct a history of Bush as some sort of great communicator, despite the fact that most people don't even like him, and nearly anyone who matters has tuned out his silly song and dance years ago.

21. But if he were to stump to people to don't agree with him,
his poll numbers would go down even further! The best he can hope for is to hold his numbers steady somewhere between pathetic and dismal. I suppose he could just stay in the bunker with Dick and skip the next couple of years, but then the MSM would fill the news vacuum with things the Dems are saying an doing and they can't let that happen. Gotta give Wolf Blitzer and Blitz Wolfer something to talk about besides the truth. And not only that, they've got a whole bunch of money to spend on speech-makin', so they might as well blow it on dumbasses that are as ignorant and stupid as their Dumbass-in-Chief.

4. Bush is coming to Sugar Land (near Houston) today....
To "help" Shelley Sekula-Gibbs, who's running for DeLay's old spot. I already clipped this in another thread, but thought it bore repeating.

Bush will be appearing at Sugar Land Regional Airport.... It is at the busiest intersection of two major roadways, Highways 6 and 90A, with a major freeway right beside it.

Men far wise than I am have decided that 5:00 p.m. is the best time to do this. On a normal day, at 5:00 p.m. the entire area is a parking lot. Trying to get home from work, you will sit in traffic for 45 minutes in this exact area during rush hour.

Men far wiser than I am have decided that pouring concrete is a magnificent thing, so the entire area is currently “under construction” with lots of heavy equipment and torn-up roadways. “Under construction” is a nice word for Hell Hole.

Men far wiser than I am have decided that bringing a President whose approval ratings are generally the same numbers as my freezer temperature is a dandy idea, and doing it at a time that guarantees to hack-off people trying to get home from work with the sun in their eyes is charming.

The repukes are doing poorly because of Bush's performance as president.

And HE's the one stumping for them.

Really, it's hilarious. They picked the number 1 person their members are turning against them for.

May they keep toting their weakest point.

10. yes -- here's to Dubya's "reverse coattails"!
It's kind of funny to watch people dropping him like a hot potato (or bag of flaming manure, to use a Halloween analogy?). Especially after he went on and on about "loyalty", meanwhile cutting people loose the moment he felt they weren't helping him (David Frum for example).

25. Exactly...
... no doubt many Republicans have figured out what their problem is, but who dares to tell the Emporer he's wearing no clothes?

I hope Bush wastes the rest of his presidency out on the road, spewing useless and frankly juvenile platitudes to his few remaining brain-dead loyalists who are just stupid enough to think he's saying something.

That way, he can't be in Washington, fucking up everything he touches.

8. the 37% who will keep the GOP in power next week
Why? Historically less that 50% of Americans should turn out to vote next week. Even if only three quarters of this 37% turn out that will be a majority of votes.

Apathy about the political process, almost endemic in the US (IMHO), in conjuction with this 37% of "idiots" who the GOP will concentrate on getting out to vote will see then keeping both houses.

If everyone on the board can get another 1 or 2 people out to vote with them there may be a chance. For the future of the world you must do this.

Peace.

18. With all due respect, I can't take anymore negativity
Yes, we need to work hard before, during and after the election. I don't mind being reminded 1000 times a day and I remind people, too, but I don't want the negativity to become a self-fulfilling prophesy.

I think we should all say to every last person we run into between now and Election Day, "Have you voted? It's really important that you do. Did you know there's early voting?" and so on and so forth. Phone bank, walk precincts, put up yard signs, have house parties. Warn people of the dangers we have to watch out for. But, for God's sake, please stop predicting the worst. We need to start thinking like winners even as we work like we're 20 points behind. Just my exasperatd 2 cents. I know your intentions are good.

11. Keep on stumping, Stumpy! With over 60% over the public against
the war and Bush every night is shown on the news as yelling at the audience, turning red and calling anyone against him a cut and runner, it is no surprise that the 60% public realizes that he is talking about the them.

34. He's planning on coming to Idaho
The most unpopular vice president in U.S. history will be stumping for the most despised politician in the state of Idaho, one Bill Sali, who is running against Democrat Larry Grant for the 1st Congressional District's open seat. Cheney was here a few months ago to raise money for Sali, who had just won a plurality in the GOP primary with a whopping 25% of the vote. While in the state legislature Sali's extremism and abrasive style made him persona non grata, even amongst his fellow Republicans. Idaho House Speaker Newcomb recently called him a "complete idiot without an ounce of empathy in his whole frickin' body", and then proclaimed "you can put that in the paper". Most of Sali's campaign funding has come from the Club For Growth and the national party. Polls show the race neck-and-neck, with independents going for Grant by a 3:1 margin. Dick Cheney's visit might be all the insurance Grant needs to pull this one off!

35. So, Bush flies around the country, preaching to his choir........
on the taxpayers dime, because you KNOW he always finds some "official" reason to be at each and every place he's stumping. And the media?(............crickets chirping.............) Now, if a DEMOCRAT was to do that, why.......there would be such an outcry from our Korporate Media the country would be at Democrat's throats for wasting taxpayer money this way.
I think the media is licking it's chops, HOPING that Democrats win at least one House of Congress, so they can once again do what they do best: attack Democrats in a never-ending cacophony of propaganda, lies and distortions.
I say, let's oblige them...........and then tear their little media monopoly apart, limb from rotten limb. It's past time for a "fair and balanced" media to return to the airwaves.
