Outside money, mostly for GOP, floods Georgia congressional races

WASHINGTON - National Republican groups have spent almost $1.2 million trying to oust Georgia Democrats Jim Marshall and John Barrow from their congressional seats, erasing the financial advantages the incumbents had going into the campaign.
The Economic Freedom Fund, a GOP-affiliated "527" advocacy group, has led the way in spending. The group, backed by the same donor who spearheaded the Swift Boat attacks on Democratic Sen. John Kerry, has spent almost $700,000 between the two races, according to Federal Election Commission filings filed through Oct. 20.
The National Republican Congressional Committee, meanwhile, has spent slightly less than $500,000.
The money has bought valuable television airtime, mailers and automated phone calls criticizing the Democrats as out of step with Georgia voters.
