Feds pooh-pooh Web-terror threat vs. football stadiums

WASHINGTON
.............
"On Sunday, October 22nd, 2006, there will be seven 'dirty' explosive devices detonated in seven different U.S. cities," read the anonymous message by "javness" on thefriendsociety.com.

The posting predicted Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden would claim responsibility for the blasts, and civil wars and economic collapse would follow.

NFL officials were notified of the threat, which FBI spokesman Richard Kolko said was of "questionable" credibility.

The original threat was posted Oct. 2 on Justcurio.us by a user claiming to be in Australia, according to terrorism expert Rita Katz of the SITE Institute in Washington.

The Web site is not used by jihadists and the threat was likely false, she said.

2. Oh, they would NEVER do that.
Just ask our good Republican leadership (or our own Committee of Public Safety).

5. Ok, then, why did
Homeland Security issue the warning to organizations like the Atlanta Falcons if the threat is not credible?

I know from a sports talk radio program yesterday afternoon that the Falcons had been contacted about a threat to the Georgia Dome. If the threat was of questionable credibility, then why announce a very public warning?

Just asking.

9. One of the seven cities is Oakland

which blows my theory--unless it's included as a red herring to divert suspicion...

According to USA Today, "Homeland Security notified officials in New York, Miami, Atlanta, Seattle, Houston, Oakland and Cleveland that an English-language website called thefriendsociety.com had posted a warning on Oct. 12 about "dirty bombs..."

P.S. By the way, New York doesn't have an NFL stadium. Did the poster confuse it with New Jersey's Giants Stadium, or did he confuse it with Buffalo (Bills) New York? Then again, maybe he figures that no one would notice if a dirty bomb went off in Buffalo or New Jersey...
