San Francisco Chronicle recommends Arnold Schwarzenegger
Edited on Wed Oct-18-06 08:36 PM by Winebrat
Gov. Schwarzenegger to stay the course
Wednesday, October 18, 2006

(10-18) 17:10 PDT --

GOV. Arnold Schwarzenegger said "something very special happened" in his third year in office.

"We found the groove," he proclaimed during an interview with our editorial board last week.

And Sacramento has been grooving with him. The just-completed legislative session represented one of the most productive in recent memory. The Republican governor and Democratic legislators worked together on essential long-term goals (upgrade our transportation systems and schools, help stop global warming) and short-term imperatives (raise minimum wage, reform foster care, secure drug discounts for the uninsured) that will have an impact on Californians' lives.

The climate of cooperation in Sacramento can be traced directly to the conciliatory tone struck by Schwarzenegger on the night of last year's special-election debacle, when voters soundly rejected his ideas to weaken teacher tenure, overhaul the budget process and reform the way legislative districts are drawn. Schwarzenegger said the message from voters was "you fix it" -- by working with legislators -- in Sacramento.

1. Wow!
Ah-nuld must really have the state under his spell or something, that's the only thing I can figure. Just remember, CA, you get who you vote for and who you deserve. He may be toning it down now for the election, but look out once he's re-elected.

21. You took the words out of my mouth.
I hate when posters scold us Californians for having Arnold as our governor. Most of us on DU have gone to great lengths to oppose Arnold. You should feel bad for us--not chastise us. People aren't welcome on DU to chastise all of us Americans for electing Bush. It's the same thing.

Thanks. I'll go back to lurking now.

14. I needled the Readers' Rep about why, after running Kevin
Shelley headlines for weeks, they never reported that he'd been cleared.

They also delayed reporting on the recertification of Diebold.

Lather, rinse and repeat.

Sacramento Bee also came out for him, and didn't the LA Times as well? Has there ever been a worse run campaign than Phil's?

6. Phil all but disappeared after the primary, The Gropenfuher has been
wall to wall ads for months now and thats killed Phil's numbers. He finally came out with an ad last week thats actually a good one but it's too late imo. I will be voting for Phil and crossing my fingers that he can somehow win, also my city uses optical scan instead of electronic voting so hopefully we won't have voting problems here.

27. This was never
"ours for the taking." The simple fact is that too many people in this state like having a movie star for a governor and before you start raggin' on California may I throw out a few names? Fred Gandy, Fred Thompson, Jessie Ventura. To answer your question, there is a lot wrong with the California Dems but none of it has to do with Arnie remaining in the governor's mansion.

20. The Santa Barbara Independant endorsed Arnold
Every good-sized town has a paper like this... it's sort of like the SF Bay Guardian or the Sacramento News and Review. The tabloid-style free paper with a young, left-leaning audience.

7. arnold sells more papers - LA Times and its disgusting promo for him ->
days after endorsing arnold, the times ran a front page article with a big picture: arnold stolling through New York like the terminator and phil angelides pic in a little box, showing him looking all disgruntled. the article bragged about arnold and poo poo'd the democrats chances.

it was a full page AD not a news item or story.

33. Now if we could just get Boxer to
run for president!!! With John Conyers as her running mate, that would be a dream ticket, indeed.

As for Feinstein-she's much more of a GOP tool than she'd like you to think. She was in favor of the Iraq war because her husband stood to profit from it, which he has; truly sickening.

17. How can something be so unbelievable AND predictable at the same time?
Edited on Thu Oct-19-06 06:01 AM by mhatrw
Arnie had about a 25% approval rating in CA one year ago.

I predicted that the only way the Democrats could lose would be to have primary pitting two and just two weak but evenly matched candidates against each other in a negative attack ad spending spree, then have Dem voters pick the guy whose opponent's negative ads were the most tailor made for Arnie to piggyback on.

And that's just what happened. Why did the Dems do everything possible to destroy themselves, then have their candidate fall off the face of the earth?

In the most liberal city in the country, everybody from the pretty boy mayor to every TV anchor and morning radio talk show host to both of the city's daily newspapers is now continually singing Arnie's praises like he's somehow become God's gift to liberals.

18. Here are Arnie's Monthly Approval Ratings Since February This Year
Edited on Thu Oct-19-06 06:52 AM by mhatrw
35% - 2/06
37% - 3/06
38% - 4/06
45% - 5/06 (What happened other than two Dems beating on each other? Nothing.)
For some reason they skipped June.
49% - 7/06 (Again, what did he do to change the minds of 14% of voters since 2/06? Basically nothing.)
44% - 8/06 (Still up 9% since February - Why? How?)
53% - 9/06 (A 9% jump in a month? Up 18% since just February? How? Why?)

19. California media is now in full whoring mode for Arnold.
It's just sickening to turn on the TV, read the paper or listen to the radio and hear every PRE$$TITUTE try to top each other in kissing Arnold's ass.

Doesn't matter to me. I will STILL vote for Angilides no matter what. What is even more disgusting is that I got my sample ballot and my polling place is in the church across the street. The church with the big Arnold sign in front of it.

Including the L.A. Times and The Chronicle.

Both recently had management changes that moved them to the right.

24. Same with the Sacramento Bee.
Used to be a fine, Democratic leaning newspaper until they sold out. They are also endorsing Arnold. And Arnold WILL win if my family is typical. I voted absentee for Angelides (holding my nose), but my democrat husband and my usually democrat sister & her family are all voting for Arnold. I think Angelides is going to get clobbered.

35. Why?
My sister because she works with nurses and thinks their union makes too many demands. So she is against unions as is Arnold. My husband thinks Arnold balances out a Dem controlled CA legislature. My brother-in-law and his family just LIKE Arnold (celebrity worship?)Otherwise they are voting Dem. Go figure.

31. absolutely...
I remember in '88 the Chronicle endorsed Poppy for president - my friends and I were so outraged (isn't a local newspaper supposed to represent the community they serve?) that we wanted to burn copies of the Chron on the doorstep of their buiding in protest. The only thing that scared us off was the robocop-clad SF police department.

Most California dailies have tried for years to shove the right wing down our throats - this latest episode isn't all that unusual.
